Being undefeated is one thing, but doing it on your hometown in your first season is a totally different feeling. That’s exactly what reigning SEC Freshman of the Year MiLaysia Fulwiley did earlier this month. For her it was many years.
“The moment has definitely come full circle,” the Columbia resident tells ESSENCE. “South Carolina was the primary school to supply me, and since I’m from here, I at all times desired to play for them. They believed in me from day one and I’m glad I proved to them that I could bring home a national championship.
Fulwiley has been a state legend since she was an adolescent. She began playing varsity basketball within the seventh grade and that very same yr she received her first scholarship offer from none apart from Dawn Staley. She has won 4 state championships in six years of playing college basketball, and winning at the best level is nothing latest for her. However, winning a national title in her first collegiate season was something she could only have imagined.
“Winning the championship is a dream,” he says. “So to do it so early in your career means a lot. My teammates keep reminding me how crazy it is that we even did it. But now we want to do it again.” A repeat of the South Carolina game is not too far-fetched either, especially with Fulwiley returning for a second yr. She provided a missing offensive spark that the Gamecocks did not have last yr, losing within the Final Four to Caitlin Clark and Iowa. She averaged nearly 12 points off the bench, which was an enormous reason why her team finished the season undefeated this time around, becoming only the ninth team in NCAA history to accomplish that.
“Being undefeated is not easy,” explains Fulwiley. “We made it look easy, but it surely’s not. We love Coach Staley and I’m glad we could help her make history.
After scoring a career-high 24 points within the SEC Championship against Angel Reese and LSU, she became the primary freshman in South Carolina history to earn SEC Tournament MVP honors. She also became the primary person to sign with NIL for 2 huge brands. “I chose Curry Brand because they felt like family and made me feel like I could be myself,” she says. “With Red Bull it wasn’t a problem for me at all because they are very nice and I feel they suit my playing style.”
Fulwiley’s first season was stuffed with memorable moments. Before the season, she had high expectations and he or she met each of them. Despite its huge success, the 2023 McDonald’s All-American still stays humble. After winning a national title, receiving several awards and accolades, and even winning “MiLaysia Fulwiley Day” at W.J. Keenan High School, she didn’t put herself above other freshmen like Juju Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo. When asked who the perfect freshman within the country is, she replies, “I’ll say I’m one of the best.”
Without a doubt, she is. Not just top-of-the-line freshmen within the country, but top-of-the-line players regardless of sophistication. He already has one ring to prove it. And with no less than one other three years under Coach Staley, it is not out of the query that she may very well be considered top-of-the-line of all time.

Shaunie’s husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, under fire after telling woman to ‘shush’ during service
Call it divine intervention or a crucial plan of action, but Shaunie O’Neal’s husband, Pastor Keion Henderson, has divided social media after the church closed its congregation.
A video has begun circulating online showing a Lighthouse Church leader having to tell a woman to “shush down” when she screams loudly during a service.
In a video of the May 5 service, Henderson could be seen along with his hands raised in praise as he sang “I Lift Up My Hands” and spoke in tongues. Throughout the silent moment, the constant screaming of a choir member who stood behind the stage could be heard.
At one point, the pastor approached her and said, “Shhh, hey, stop it. Quiet, quiet – and he snapped his finger at her.
As Henderson returned to center stage, he announced, “Silence in the name of Jesus. The only voice I want to hear is his.” Although she seemed to still be reeling with emotion, she not made any disturbing sounds.
Some people online who claimed to be members of the church reported that the person routinely behaved in the identical way every week. One person claimed that she became noticeably louder with each service, leading many to imagine that it was not the Lord’s spirit that was causing her to lose herself in the current moment.

“If she managed to cut it off so quickly, it wasn’t necessary at all,” wrote one critic. Second comment read: “Some people enjoy themselves in church with all the theatricality… that’s enough already.”
But not everyone was completely happy with the way in which Henderson silenced her.
One person rated him as follows: “He works from the spirit of himself, smh.” Another stated that as an alternative of snapping his finger, he must have prayed for her. “Wait now! That’s why people stay at home.”
Another harsh tackle this event was: “How did you silence her in the name of Jesus when the Holy Spirit could be in her? This man was putting on a show… a show…. Like most of them!”
Shaunie’s former best friend Tami Roman also wrote: “The Holy Spirit can’t be silenced. He felt something was improper and shut down.
Henderson has been attending church for a very long time and said he received a call to ministry on the age of 5. He began his first church, Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist, in 2003, when he was just 21 years old and a full-time student. In 2009, he founded Lighthouse Church in Houston, Texas, which has since grown to five campuses across the state.
However, the Gary, Indiana native is best often known as the husband of Shaquille O’Neal’s ex-wife. The retired NBA player and Shaunie, the mother of his 4 children, were married for nine years before the wedding led to 2011 due to O’Neal’s infidelity.

Henderson and his now first lady began dating in 2019. They got engaged before Thanksgiving in November 2021.
“It was one of the most magical and special days of my life because I was someone who had never been officially proposed to,” she told People magazine.
She was also completely happy that he was a unprecedented man. The couple married in May 2022. Their blended family also includes his daughter Katelyn from a previous relationship.
Shaquille spoke favorably about his ex’s departure, although he also said she would at all times be “his wife.”
