Nas’ Illmatic is 30 years old and it’s easy to see why it’s still a groundbreaking, genre-defining album

Published

on

On April 19, 2024, Nasir Jones — higher often known as the legendary GOAT-level MC Nas — and Christopher Martin — higher often known as the legendary GOAT-level hip-hop producer DJ Premier — released their debut single “Define My Name” from their upcoming collaborative album. In the late Nineties, a collaborative album between Nas and Premier would break the then-defunct Twitter. Hip-hop heads would salivate on the considered two titans of the genre, seemingly at the height of their powers, giving us a project consisting of 1 rapper and one producer. You can count me amongst those people; I still hope that each song Premier has kept within the vault has Nas’ version of Group Home’s “Livin’ Proof” in his will – perhaps his final gift to hip-hop might be the discharge of those records in his will. One can only hope.

Either way, I do not like (*30*) Maybe I’m just old and I’ll be 45 soon. I not miss recent songs that sound old. To be certain, I’ll listen to their album if it ever comes out; each artists deserved my sympathy, but this really made me want to return and listen to Nas’ debut album “Illmatic”, which turned 30 on April 19. I pulled out the album and was transported back to the mid to late 90’s and all of the arguments, debates, and discussions my friends had for hours into the night about whether or not it was the very best hip-hop album of all time. , looking back a seemingly silly discussion. In 1994, we had no idea where hip-hop was heading or whether an album would age well.

In 2024, we all know the reply: Illmatic is still one among – if not THE – hip-hop album of all time. It’s nearly as good in 2024 because it was in 1994. And I do not say that evenly.

I’m late for Illmatic. When the album was released in April 1994, I used to be a freshman in highschool and my hip-hop listening in New York was limited to Pete Rock & CL Smooth and De La Soul. At this point I used to be really into West Coast and South Coast artists. Also, Outkast’s video for “Player’s Ball” was cyclical and seemed rather more familiar to me than all of the New York videos. And when Outkast’s “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” got here out a week later, well, my entire hip-hop life moved to my area.

It wasn’t until college, after I made friends from all around the world and became curious about sampling and producing, that I actually began listening to New York hip-hop, and that is when “Illmatic” became one among my favorite albums. Not only was Nas an otherworldly lyricist, however the beats – provided by DJ Premier, Pete Rock, LES, A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip and Large Professor – are unbeatable. I remember seeing a video regarding “It’s not hard to say” and I loved that record, but it surely didn’t make me want to listen to “Illmatic.” But even today, “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” is still my favorite song on the album. Nas’ wordplay and the flow of the song are deeply memorable to me. When I actually frolicked writing rhymes, I at all times wanted to be nearly as good at that song as Nas.

I do not know if I’ve entered the elder statesman stage of life, but I actually appreciate that a lot of the music that shaped my teenage years is still going strong and price discussing. Debates not matter; “Illmatic” is one of the essential albums of the genre. You could teach a semester-long class on this album and Nas’ perspective and ability to embrace his surroundings and create such striking narratives inside hip-hop. Nas is now and will at all times be considered one among the best artists to ever touch a microphone; the thought that he wrote this album as a teenager is terrifying.

When I delved into the album shortly after entering college, I viewed Nas because the rapper whose work all rappers should aspire to, and I still feel that way concerning the album. When I talk to younger people (nephews, students) about hip-hop, my default is to tell them to listen to “Illmatic” purely due to lyricism and Nas’ ability to construct and explain the world from the window of the project. “New York State of Mind” is a song that many rappers have striven to record, and for good reason: it makes you’re feeling such as you’re in New York. I felt like Queensbridge was a place I needed to understand to understand New York. While this has proven to be unfaithful in my life, the undeniable fact that an album could put me in a place has never impressed me, even today.

Even more impressive is the undeniable fact that Nas is still a top songwriter; This talent can’t be appreciated enough. While I don’t know what a DJ Premier and Nas album would ultimately sound like, I’m without end grateful for what these two gave us on Illmatic, what Nas released into the world, and the way it helped shape my hip-hop education .

Represent, represent.

Phaedra Parks

Reality star Phaedra Parks, 50, divorced her ex-husband Apollo Nida the identical yr she left the Bravo show that made her famous. But now she has finally found her “peace”.

The former Real Housewives of Atlanta Southern belle says she thinks living in public for the past 14 years has made her look old, but now she’s regaining her natural glow and rejuvenating her life.

“I think your surroundings can age you. Being in terrible shows with terrible women, being in terrible marriages that age you. So, once I got out of a terrible program, got out of a terrible marriage, and had wonderful children… I was able to focus on myself and not all the bullshit…’ she said in an interview with People magazine.

Parks, a well-known entertainment lawyer, joined “RHOA” in season three in 2010. The year before, she married Nida, who was five years her junior.

The two appeared on the show as a young married couple and allowed the cameras to capture their love, the birth of their two sons, Ayden Adonis Nida, 13, and Dylan Nida, 10, and the launch of their various business ventures. However, in Season 7, everything seemed to fall apart.

In 2014, Nida pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving mail fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud and identity theft. As part of his sentence, he was ordered to pay $1.9 million in restitution and began serving an eight-year prison sentence.

Previously, Nida was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison on charges of car theft.

Shortly after he was sent to prison for a second time in 2015, Parks filed for divorce. Their divorce was officially finalized in July 2017, ending their eight-year relationship. Nida was released from his sentence in 2019 and later accused his ex-wife of abandoning him and their marriage when he got into legal troubles.

“When it first happened, she wasn’t there. When I passed the verdict, she wasn’t there. My surrender, she wasn’t there. I am basically not allowed to see my children. A lot of things showed me that she wasn’t really there for me,” Nida expressed during a cameo appearance on “RHOA” in season 14, concluding: “When I left, Phaedra was definitely cold-blooded and cold-hearted.”

The same year that Nida was imprisoned, in a dramatic turn of events, Parks was fired from the cast of “RHOA” before the long-awaited 10th season.vol season.

The decision comes in the wake of a scandalous rumor propagated by Parks that fellow “RHOA” cast members Kandi Burruss and her husband, Todd Tucker, were involved in an alleged “sex dungeon” and drug controversy involving Porsha Williams and Shamea Morton.

Parks also had conflicts with other cast members, including Nene Leakes and Kenya Moore.

The lawyer-turned-funeral director admitted that her outburst at Moore during the season six reunion episode was steeped in “pent-up anger” that spilled over onto the beauty queen. In an attempt to defend her then-husband, she accused Moore of “ripping sperm banks” to find a father for her child.

Years later, Parks returned to Bravo and joined the cast of “The Real Housewives Ultimate Girl Trip.” In one episode, fellow cast member Vicki Gunvalson asked her to share details about her departure from “RHOA,” but she was reluctant to do so.

She later explained that she had talked about it before, but producers decided not to air it, stating: “You only heard one thing and obviously they decided not to play the other side. And so it is, but I live in the present.

Both Parks and Nida reunited on camera during the upcoming Season 10 finalevol season of Married to Medicine. He talked about their relationship and how they became co-parents, calling it “impeccable.”

“When I came home, everything started turning upside down,” Nida said. “I used to be nervous as all the time. She was nervous.”

The parents revealed that they would meet at Chic-fil-A for Nida to visit the boys. They eventually came to an agreement that was beneficial to everyone involved. He can come to her house, but he is not allowed inside. Parks still does not have a relationship with his current wife Sherien Almufti and does not think it is necessary.

Around the time he was recently filming a new show, text messages and recordings were leaked that appear to show Nida cheating on Almufti.

One message from his alleged mistress mentioned Parks, saying, “It’s okay to confer with FAEDra about my kids… Today has been a busy but very productive day.”

Parks did not address her ex-husband’s allegations of infidelity, nor did she deny or confirm the rumors.

Fans are urging Mo’Nique to focus on healing her relationship with her estranged son Shalon rather than fueling long-standing conflicts with Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey

Comedian Mo’Nique has modified up her act on Katt Williams’ The Dark Matter Tour. Video footage circulating on the Internet features a segment wherein the artist encourages the audience to curse her longtime enemies, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

While the audience seemed to laugh at her jokes, some people don’t find her updated performance funny and wonder why she still clings to this almost 15-year-old feud.

A clip from her Nashville, Tennessee concert stop at Bridgestone Arena was re-aired.

Taking the stage on Saturday, April 20, Mo’Nique instructed the audience to shout, “Fuck you, Oprah Winfrey,” and then say, “Fuck you, Tyler Perry.” You dick, you son of a bitch.

While talking about her relationship with “The Color Purple” producer, Mo’Nique said Oprah tried to “f**k with” her in private.

– Well, I’m a public bitch. If you are attempting to fight me behind closed doors, then open the door. “Ding-dong,” she joked.

The Oscar winner then stated that Oprah needs to “go back to being Black.” This concept suggested that the famous talk show host had sold out to white people.

Then, tongue in cheek, Mo’Nique provocatively proposed that if a person within the audience named “Melvin” were to have sex with Oprah, it might in some way lead her back to her roots within the Black community. She then questioned the validity of Oprah and Gayle King’s relationship.

A clip of the excerpt was published on The Neighborhood Talk’s Instagramand a whole bunch of their 1.9 million followers embraced the news.

Many felt that Mo’Nique was too involved within the lives of Oprah and Tyler Perry.

“At this point they will have their names on their tombstone!” one person said. Another said: “If you use your influence against me and I lose millions in potential earnings, I will never let it go. Whenever.”

Two other comments were: “Why doesn’t she move on?” and “I’m tired of this plot.”

“This is how Monique wants her son to recuperate and give you the chance to move on with his life after what she did to him,” one person surmised. “She wants DL Hughley’s family to heal and move on from what she said about his daughter, but she refuses to heal and move on from what two people allegedly did to her???? Holding a grudge against the material is crazy!”

Another said: “Girlfriend STILL!? Have you already gone to see your granddaughter? Shit!”

Monika is a wife and mother of four children. Her twin boys are 18 and live at home, but she and her oldest son from her first marriage, Shalon Watkins, have been separated for years.

Watkins talked about the challenges of growing up with “The Parkers” star and her husband, Sidney Hicks. He accused his mother of abandoning him and sharply criticized her for revealing his mental health online. Watkins added that although she has sent baby items, Mo’Nique has not yet met her granddaughter.

The 30-year-old and his girlfriend recently announced that they are expecting a child Mo’Nique’s second grandson, “another member of our family” in October.

Some agreed with the comic, agreeing with her claim that she lost hundreds of thousands and “can talk about it every day if she wants.”

Someone else wrote: “Either they fix it or she should do it by the day she leaves this earth and you can’t f**k me and think I’ll quit.”

According to the predominant character of “The Parkers”, Oprah and Tyler Perry brought her to her knees in Hollywood.

Mo’Nique starred within the award-winning 2009 independent film Precious, directed by Lee Daniels, and refused to cooperate with the press to promote the film throughout the big awards season. The actress claims that they discouraged other showrunners from staying away from her because she was difficult to work with. Perry apparently sided with her within the leaked phone call

“This is Tyler Perry. I’ll call and find out how much money is coming from Precious and I’ll send it to you,” Perry said in the video. “I’ll send it to you. Whatever it is, I’ll send it to you.

Her problems with Oprah run a little deeper.

While the billionaire was hosting her daily talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” she invited comedian brother Gerald Imes to a taping in 2010.

Imes sexually assaulted and abused Mo’Nique while the siblings were growing up in Baltimore. He admitted on Oprah that he began molesting her when she was 7 years old.

“I abused and betrayed the trust of another sibling, my sister, my blood sister. I’m sorry, Mo’Nique. I’m sorry,” he said to the host.

The “BMF” actress later interviewed Barbara Walters and shared that Oprah reached out to her before taping her brother’s episode.

She said that although the producer told her about Imes, she never told her that her mother had also been asked to appear on the show.

If she had known that her mother would also be a guest, she said she would have asked Oprah to pull the show.

The performance took place without Mo’Nique’s consent and forms the basis of why she still feels so betrayed by the tycoon.

In her recent tirade, Mo’Nique said she would not apologize to Oprah, calling her “straightforward” and a “stifled bitch.”

“I’m too damn old to be afraid of that bitch,” she continued screaming from the stage. “I’m too old to be intimidated by this bitch. I’m too old to hold on to the reality in regards to the mother king.
