While many in the Black community mourn the loss of one other cultural icon, John Amos’ daughter Shannon says she, like many of us, learned of her father’s death through the media. “I have no words,” she wrote in the caption of the post. “We are devastated and have many questions about what happened 45 days ago, learning about it from the media, as many of you do.”

“This needs to be a time to honor and rejoice his life, but we’re struggling to deal with the wave of emotion and uncertainty surrounding his death. Still, knowing that my father is finally free gives me some peace,” she added.

On October 1, the actor’s son, Kelly Christopher “KC” Amos, announced that his father died of natural causes on August 21. The news followed months of uncertainty about the “Roots” actor’s health after Shannon publicly stated that her father was a victim of elder abuse. In Instagram post from June 2023the actor’s daughter claimed his life was “hanging in the balance” after he was allegedly admitted to intensive care, adding allegations of “elder abuse and financial exploitation”. Shortly after the incident, Amos issued an announcement denying the reports.
