Steph Curry’s Father Accuses Ex-Wife Sonya of NBA Star’s ‘Shortcomings’

Published

Steph Curry

Steph Curry not only followed within the footsteps of his father Dell Curry, but additionally exceeded all expectations, becoming one of the best scorers in NBA history. However, when Steph was a teenage basketball player, he was considered a brief player with little probability of making it to the NBA.

Of course, Steph overcame what was widely considered a physical handicap to win 4 NBA championships. The 36-year-old Golden State Warriors point guard is 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 kilos. Steph’s father, meanwhile, topped out at 6-foot-5 and was listed weighing 205 kilos during his decade-long profession with the Charlotte Hornets.

During a discussion on the Audible podcast “Heat Control with Stephen and Dell Curry“Dell blamed his ex-wife Sonya for his or her son’s physical deficiencies.

“You’ve always been the smallest, shortest, skinniest kid on all your teams, from the age of six, through sixth grade, to now, and I owe that to your mother,” Dell told Steph within the second episode of the audiobook.

Although Sonya Curry is 5’10”, she was also an athlete and played volleyball while she was a student at Virginia Tech.

Instead of seeing his height as a drawback, Steph looked as if it would use it as fuel.

“The physical deficiencies that I had in the beginning, and, you know, it was always just encouragement to just work, figure it out, build confidence as you go,” Steph told comedians Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett through the November 2023 edition of the “Smartless” podcast.

Steph told the comedians that he grew up watching his father play within the NBA, which helped develop his love of the game.

“It’s kind of forced on you because you’re just in it… you’re in the gym all the time. You develop a love for it, but I grew up playing other sports, baseball, football, golf, of course,” Steph said.

Steph admitted that when he was still developing, he was less concerned about his height and more about whether he would get a scholarship to a “good school.”

“Not thinking too much about what the results were going to be. Obviously I knew what the NBA was, I knew what Division 1 basketball was, I knew it was a good way to try to get a scholarship to a good school. But everything they taught me and the coaches I had, they really made me live in the moment, which is what I try to teach my kids now,” he recalled.

Steph also opened up about some of the challenges he has needed to face because of his position in his 2023 docuseries Underrated.

“I was a skinny, short kid just trying to figure out how to get by,” Curry said in a trailer for the coming-of-age story. His mother was also a personality on the show.

“It’s not about proving others wrong, it’s about proving to myself that I’m right,” Sonya said.

Steph had so much of support throughout his basketball journey and mentioned that his mentor was 5-foot-3 former NBA player Muggsy Bogues.

“I didn’t know at the time how much of an impact he (Muggsy) had, but looking back on every interaction I had with him… when I was going to watch a game, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. The visuals, the way he was, the way he was there, just the confidence he exuded on every pitch. It was just contagious,” Steph said.

While Steph’s on-court heroics cemented his name in NBA legend, his physical presence inspired a generation of players who hope to in the future play pro. While other smaller point guards like Allen Iverson, Isiah Thomas, and Chris Paul built impeccable NBA resumes, Steph looked as if it would have a greater impact on a younger generation.

He is arguably one of essentially the most influential players in NBA history and has completely modified the best way the sport is played. In recent years, the NBA has gone from a game where larger athletes play near the basket and use their size to their advantage to a league that emphasizes the three-point shot. Curry, the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers, is credited with much of that change.

In addition to his 4 championships, Curry is a two-time NBA MVP, a ten-time NBA All-Star and won a gold medal with Team USA Basketball on the 2012 Paris Olympics on Aug. 10. Steph led the team with 24 points within the gold medal game against France, scoring several memorable moments and clutch shots On the best way.
