Rahsaan Patterson and DL Hughley slam the magazine after Patterson was excluded from the casting update.

Weeks after an explosive retrospective on kid’s network Nickelodeon, a major magazine turned its attention to the Disney series “Kids Incorporated,” which ran from 1984 to 1993, as part of “Where are they now” function.

The once-popular series featured a group of kids navigating crushes, friendships, peer pressure, and at times touching on serious topics like molestation, all while highlighting the musical performances integral to every episode, launching the careers of several of its principal stars.

People profiled the show’s white and Latino cast members: Mario Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson, Marty “Martik” Marrero, Eric Balfour, Ryan Lambert and Moosie Drier.”

However, the website neglected to jot down an article about the show’s principal cast member, “The Kid,” played by singer/actor Rahsaan Patterson. This sparked outrage from many fans of the show, including comedian DL Hugley.

The “Where You Are” artist noticed this omission and criticized the publication on social media.

“I just want to ask @stephivainashe @wendy_naugle and @people why did she leave me out of that cast list….?? Normally I would let it be as it is. But on April 14, 2024…. not really…..Really “sister”?” Patterson with subtitles on Instagram, noting that despite the fact that he calls out “People,” it has nothing to do together with his castmates and all the other artists he has worked with.

He then posted one other message on the matter he said“Over the years, I’ve gotten used to being left out. However, this is overlooked @People the article reads differently.”

After the post, his fans, the Pattersons, jumped into motion, blasting the editor and author for this omission and expressing their outrage.

One of Patterson’s famous names, Hughley, led the charge, commenting: “How can you leave out @rahsaanpatterson?!” @stephivainashe @people Cmon, everyone knows who the CHILD was at Kids Incorporated. Rahsaan was and IS A STAR!!”

@stephivainashe as I search for our extremely talented and amazing brother Rahsaan, I’m extremely disenchanted and amazed at your lack of real research. @people What is the reason for this?” one other person wrote, adding: “A redo and an apology is needed IMMEDIATELY! Rahsaan is HERE THEN AND NOW!!”

Many noted how “disrespectful” his exclusion was: “Passive work… but you’re a goat and we all know it!” then another person wrote that the publication missed the opportunity to speak about Rahsaan’s impact as a cast member from 1984 to 1987.

“@people WHY? @stephivainashe WHY? This was the BEST opportunity to talk about how much @rahsaanpatterson made a difference by having black and brown kids on this show. This allowed these kids to dream even bigger dreams and hmmm you left out the main person @rahsaanpatterson…..why?” the person explained. “To highlight someone we don’t even remember was on the show… Wow! Beyond the cheesy @people Beyond the cheesy @stephivainashe.”

Within hours, People magazine contacted Patterson and apologized for the error, attempting to correct the error made by Stephanie Sengwe, the black writer of the article.

Singer sent“The People magazine article has been updated. “Thank you to Wendy Naugle, ‘Editor-in-Chief’ of People magazine, for messaging me directly and working to immediately rectify the situation.”

“To everyone who comments,” he continued, “I send my sincere thanks for the support I have shown over the last 40 years of my career. Thank you kindly, RP.”

The update included 4 sentences about Patterson’s life, describing him as “a major character on the show.”

It continued: “Following Kids Inc., Patterson embarked on a successful music career, releasing seven studio albums between 1997 and 2019. Today, Patterson, now 50, continues to work as a musician, touring around the world. He is currently scheduled to perform at the Meltdown festival at the Southbank Center – curated this year by Chaka Khan – in London from June 14 to 23.”

Some fans felt vindicated, others still consider the artist was disrespected. Especially since the remaining profiles were three to 4 paragraphs long and detailed what the actors did after the show.

One fan summed it up: “I’m glad they corrected this text. It was sloppy work. And truthfully, they owe you a whole article.
