Published

on

You cannot discuss wrestling in 2024 without mentioning how Black wrestlers have taken over in extraordinary ways. Wrestling is deeply rooted in Black culture and vice versa. Just take a look at the indisputable fact that Lil Wayne and Meek Mill were the standout performers at WrestleMania 40 this weekend. 2 Chainz and Wale (as usual) were also at ringside. The culture loves WWE. In return, WWE has made quite a few strides in highlighting its black superstars. After all, we’re only a number of years away the primary Black WrestleMania-only important eventand since then, WWE has only done more to showcase Black talent on screen.

This weekend at WrestleMania, NXT featured a Black important event for the primary time, recent Black champions, The Rock’s return to the important event, and more. Andscape senior writers David Dennis Jr. and Martenzie Johnson, watched every minute of the weekend, dissecting black wrestlers, their performances and the way WWE used them. There was a time when these major events would make Black wrestling fans hold their breath in anticipation of the offensive, derogatory depiction, but for now, those days appear to be over – hopefully. Read how we’re celebrating Black Wrestling Weekend at WrestleMania 40.

R-truth

Match: Sixpack tag team ladder match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship

Summary: It was one of the uplifting moments at WrestleMania, considering R-Truth almost lost his leg to an infection a number of years ago. This was R-Truth’s first WrestleMania win and he did it with typical R-Truth comedy fashion. It was a ladder match – it ends with the team climbing the ladder to regain the championship belts – but R-Truth found a solution to turn it right into a tag match where he waited to be tagged in by his partner, The Miz. R-Truth also pulled out his John Cena imitation before finally expressing his approval by moving one in every of his opponents out of the ring and to the skin floor. The match was cinematic.

Grade: A

Kelani Jordan

Match: Six-team tag match

Summary: Kelani Jordan appeared a little bit later within the match, which was centered on Thea Hails’ confrontation along with her former friend, Jacy Jayne. However, Jordan is flexible. She has high flying skills that made her one in every of the standout figures on this event. Just look This AND This.

Once again, Jordan wasn’t the focal point, but for an event that had so many big moments, hers stood out. Give us more Kelani Jordan.

Grade: B

Oba Femi

Match: Triple threat for the NXT North American Championship

Summary: That’s not exactly what The New Day’s Big E meant when he said:big, meaty men slap the meat” because Oba Femi was the one muscular fighter within the fight, nevertheless it was still a very good match. Femi witnessed one man throw one other man out of the ring at him. But one way or the other he recovered enough to find a way to lift a person on his shoulders while that man was lifting one other man on his shoulders. Plus, although Dijak was the gang favorite within the match, NXT allowed Femi to retain the title, which is at all times a great thing.

Grade: A

Williams trick

Match: Singles match vs. Carmelo Hayes

Summary: This was an example of WWE’s long-term booking at its best. They began sowing the seeds for this feud a number of months ago and eventually managed to get it posted here. The results of the match never really mattered as Williams had 16,000 (mostly white) fans shouting in unison “oh what a trick”. Hayes made Williams look really good, and Williams can only construct on that going into other feuds. That being said, the ending might have been higher and more brutal for a feud/match orchestrated by Hayes beating Williams’ legs like Charlie Murphy.

Grade: B+

Carmelo Hayes

Match: Singles vs. Trick Williams

Summary: Carmelo Hayes is a textbook narcissistic villain. In a vignette for that game, Hayes said he built the inspiration for himself and his former friend Trick Williams, and Williams was just carrying the bricks. In this match, Hayes cheated, hit Williams with a low blow, and smirked at the gang with a heel move. Hayes seems primed for a run on the WWE important roster, so this was a pleasant swan song for somebody who fans are sure to hate at the subsequent level. He also gets extra points for making Williams seem like a megastar. Hayes was only a trick that fans desired to shout out.

Grade: A

Scale

Match: Tag Team Match with Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins

Summary: Everything about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a giant deal. His input video it felt just like the opening credits of a Marvel movie. Upon entering The Rock, his iconic Brahma bull burst into flames. The match itself lasted well over 40 minutes and was the second longest important event in WrestleMania history. The Rock’s last full match was over 11 years ago, but you would not find a way to inform. He took shocks. He wasn’t out of breath. He took a spear from Roman Reigns. He also hit Cody Rhodes in the top with a weightlifting belt. WWE got the perfect return on investment they may get by bringing The Rock back for this match. WrestleMania Night 2 saw Rock turn into the ultimate boss and face John Cena and Undertaker. Each time, the non-existent roof fell off the stadium. The Rock played all of it perfectly, humbled himself and gave us an epic series of matches with Rhodes and Reigns.

Rating: A+

(*40*)From left to right: Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and Naomi enter the ring in the course of the first night of WrestleMania 40 at Lincoln Financial Field on April 6 in Philadelphia.

Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and Naomi, the Big Three

Match: Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and Naomi vs. Damage CTRL

Summary: It was one of the amazing performances of your complete weekend. Naomi has made more WrestleMania appearances than some other woman. In the match, her job was to offer support while WWE built its two most assured stars, Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill. Belair has headlined WrestleMania before and is further along in her journey. So the match was largely a solution to showcase Cargill.

Cargill has a license to print money and looked like one million bucks even in limited operation. It was enough to point out us her incredible strength, beauty and charisma. However, the match will likely be more defined by the entry of the Big Three, who featured the same wardrobe, elevated platform and star power. Who knows what the long run holds, nevertheless it could be a surprise if Belair and Cargill don’t face off for the title in three hundred and sixty five days.

Rating: A+++

New day

Match: A six-team tag match for the undisputed tag team championship

Summary: It appears New Day is biding his time until Big E – who broke his neck two years ago – hopefully returns from his injury. Xavier Woods reached the highest by performing an elbow drop from the highest rope onto his opponent, who was lying horizontally on a ladder. However, like DIY and New Catch Republic, The New Day were a filler band on this match and deserved more.

Grade: C

(*40*)From left to right: Angelo Dawkins, B-Fab, Bobby Lashley and Montez Ford enter the ring in the course of the second night of WrestleMania 40 at Lincoln Financial Field on April 7 in Philadelphia.

WWE/Getty Images

Bobby Lashley and Street Profits

Match: The Final Testament (Karrion Kross & Authors of Pain) vs. Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) (Philadelphia Street Fight)

Summary: This match got here after the chaos that reigned on opening Sunday. I’m glad Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits made it to WrestleMania, but I can not help but think they might have been used for something more meaningful. The match was okay, with loads of seating and a pleasant ending because of Montez Ford’s acrobatics. My hope for the long run is that Lashley and The Street Profits have something to sink their teeth into that may lift everyone’s spirits, especially Ford, who appears like a solo superstar within the making.

Grade: B-

Samantha Irvin

Game: All

Summary: We cannot forget the weekend without recognizing that this WrestleMania cemented Samantha Irvin as among the finest ring announcers in skilled wrestling history. She screamed at the highest of her lungs, evoking emotion and exciting the gang and wrestlers with every introduction. There are many legendary ring announcers on the market, but Irvin is pretty much as good as any of them.

Rating: A+

(*40*)Snoop Dogg broadcasts record attendance for the second night of WrestleMania 40 at Lincoln Financial Field on April 7, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Snoop Dogg

Match: Commentary

Hey, Snoop Dogg is a Hall of Famer and pinned The Miz last yr at WrestleMania, so he counts. Snoop Dogg’s color commentary is value listening to. He lost his mind throughout the Final Testament match with Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits. I actually would not mind if WWE did a second screen broadcast with him as host. He’s an actual fan and will really add some spontaneity to the watch. Give us more!

Grade: B+

Does Janet Jackson get a pass for her comments about Kamala Harris’ race? — Andlandscape

Published

on

By

Down quote podcast host Rachel Lindsay: “It’s been a rough week for the Jacksons.”

September 15 Tito Jackson, founding father of the Jackson 5 died on the age of 70 after a heart attack. September 21 published extensive interview with singer Janet Jackson about motherhood, growing up in such a famous family and the upcoming presidential election in 2024. The artist, who rarely took fans by the side of her legendary velvet rope, made the news after questioning the racial background of presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris. This move left many wondering how such a beloved black icon may very well be so out of touch with reality and why he was not held accountable for spreading lies.

When I first heard Jackson say Harris wasn’t black, I immediately dismissed it as one other social media lie. After all, this election season has been filled with bots, misleading memes and disinformation campaigns on X, formerly often called Twitter. So, seeing tweets circulating through which one of the famous black pop stars on the earth disparaged the primary black woman nominated for the best political office within the United States didn’t immediately alarm me. But then I saw the link to the article and skim it myself.

And yes…Janet said that sh….

Asked what she thought about the potential of Harris making history, Jackson replied: “You know what they allegedly said? She’s not black. That’s what I heard. That she is Indian. When a reporter told her Harris was of black and South Asian descent, Jackson replied: “Her father is white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told they discovered her father was white.”

Predictably, Jackson’s comments caused a stir on social media. Both Harris supporters and opponents he gave the singer grace for being flawed or using her words to proceed attacking the vp. co-host Whoopi Goldberg felt that Jackson’s comments were simply a mistake. “Sometimes people make mistakes and are flawed! They made a mistake; they were flawed. “It happens” Goldberg said on the show.

But this will not be a easy “mistake”. Jackson didn’t misspel Harris’s name or discover her running mate. Instead, she repeated a right-wing conspiracy theory that seeks to discredit Harris by questioning her racial identity. As the mother of a biracial child (she has a son with her ex-husband, Qatari business executive Wissam Al Mana) – and aunt to several others – Jackson should know firsthand that Black people will be multiracial and multicolored. And yet, the singer seemed confused about Harris, even after being informed that the Democratic nominee was indeed Black.

Of course, Jackson could easily set the record straight by issuing a statement regarding her comments, but up to now that hasn’t happened. Someone allegedly connected to the singer shared an apology on Jackson’s behalf on Buzzfeed, but Jackson’s camp quickly quashed it by calling out “unauthorized”.

This begs the query: if Jackson’s team can respond so quickly to a false apology, why hasn’t she corrected her erroneous statements about Harris?

Some point to the death of her brother Tito as the rationale for Jackson’s lack of explanation, but while the family continues to grieve, the singer’s representatives still had time to reject the false apology. Others identified her older brother and manager Randy Jackson’s support for right-wing ideas as the rationale why Jackson repeated this plot so easily. Either way, Jackson is an adult who has been a star for most of his life. She’s not a child who doesn’t know higher. After five a long time within the industry, she knows tips on how to cope with public relations mistakes, so her decision to stay silent leads us to an uncomfortable truth: Jackson must either imagine what she said about Harris, or she is totally divorced from the fact and consequences of those statements. elections are for black people.

The Jackson siblings grew up as Jehovah’s Witnesses, a religion that counsels its members to not vote or engage in politics. To that end, Jackson has never been directly involved politically — although she hasn’t campaigned for any candidate she actually expressed her support former President Barack Obama just months into his first term in 2009. Still, she needs to be held accountable for spreading disinformation about Harris and refusing to correct her testimony. We have sued others for similar mistakes, reminiscent of rapper Meek Mill for repeating debunked ideas on Harris as California prosecutor, model Amber Rose for claiming the vp is “giving in to black people” or NFL player Sauce Gardner for being apolitical at a time when the stakes are just too high for Black people. So Jackson shouldn’t be excluded because she is near us. She must be called out – lovingly, after all – because telling a reporter “you heard” that Harris’ dad was white is solely unacceptable, especially in 2024.

To be clear, Jackson doesn’t should get involved in politics. I’d relatively she didn’t try this if she was going to be so ill-informed about the fundamental facts. But while we still love Jackson – and we’ll proceed to follow her in it ongoing fan war with singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake — if she begins to publicly wade into political waters, she’s going to have to do her homework and take control of her voice and voices.

LeBron teams up with Bronny for Lakers workout

LeBron James Bronny James, LeBron James Lakers, Bronny James Lakers, did LeBron James retire?, who drafted Bronny James?, Did the Lakers pick Bronny James?, Will Bronny James play in the NBA?, Who did Bronny James get drafted by?, Is LeBron still in the NBA?, does lebron james still play basketball?, Who is the oldest player in the NBA? theGrio.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James and his son Bronny are already training with the remainder of the Los Angeles Lakers during voluntary offseason workouts. JJ Redick and his coaching staff are planning and discussing a moment early in the brand new season when father and son will share an NBA court for the primary time.

While the small print of that historic day are still unknown, Redick shares the basketball world’s anticipation of watching the perfect scorer in NBA history play next to Lakers’ recent second-round draft pickNo father and son have ever played within the NBA at the identical time, let alone on the identical team.

“We don’t have anything planned, per se, in terms of a commitment to do it that way,” Redick said. “We’ve obviously talked about it as a staff and we’ve worked out some details of what that might look like, but we haven’t committed to anything, and obviously there’s a discussion to have once we’re all together, with Bronny and LeBron as well. They should be part of that discussion as well.”

Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka expressed their excitement in regards to the partnership during Wednesday’s preseason press conference. Redick sees only positives within the duo’s on-court connection and doesn’t anticipate any friction or concerns within the family dynamic.

“I don’t see it as a challenge any different than any other challenge of coaching a player or coaching a relationship,” Redick said.

Pelinka then jokingly threw in an anecdote from a recent practice: “Maybe the challenge is Bronny, when, like in our exhibition game, he got plugged into LeBron, and LeBron took him baseline, up and under the glass. The words they exchanged afterward were probably harder than anything.”

Lifestyle

The Lakers haven’t announced or made a call on how long Bronny, who turns 20 during training camp, will play on the NBA roster alongside his famous father, who turns 40 in December.

Although the front office has not confirmed it, Bronny James will likely spend a lot of the upcoming season within the G League developing his skills. He played in just 25 games during his lone season on the University of Southern California after recovery after cardiac arrest during off-season training.

Pelinka and Redick remain very optimistic in regards to the 6-foot-11 Bronny’s ability to play within the NBA.

“Bronny, I feel very fortunate to coach him because he’s young and hungry and has a lot of natural ability that we can really mold into a really good NBA player,” Redick said. “And he’s a fantastic kid. He’s incredibly coachable. He’s got the right spirit and energy every day.”

LeBron James took a vacation after leading the USA to the gold medal on the Olympic Games in Paris, but he’s been back within the gym for two weeks now, Redick said.

According to Pelinka, the Lakers didn’t make any daring moves this summer, limited by the contracts of their top players and the brand new league system that made it rather more difficult to enhance their rosters.

So the Lakers roster across the James family will largely be the identical group that made it to the Western Conference Finals in 2023 but finished eighth within the West last spring before losing to Denver in the primary round. Those Lakers weren’t elite teams, even with the wonderful health of LeBron and Anthony Davis, two veterans with significant mileage who’ve dealt with significant injury issues in previous seasons.

Pelinka said he could be open to moving two tradeable first-round picks if he saw a suggestion that may lead to “sustainable excellence for the Lakers.” He would also move one pick for “a slight improvement if we felt it was the right thing to do.”

Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent and Jalen Hood-Schifino are healthy for training camp, but not all might be ready for practice next week.

Christian Wood might be re-evaluated in six weeks following surgery on his left knee earlier this month.

Pelinka also revealed that Jarred Vanderbilt, a defensive end who played in just 29 games last season due to a foot injury, underwent successful “procedures” on each feet at the beginning of the offseason. The forward continues to be recovering, but Pelinka said he’s optimistic that Vanderbilt might be able to play on Opening Night on Oct. 22.
