During a recent interview with James Corden, a famous hip-hop mogul and producer Doctor Dre recently shared insight into his harrowing battle with hypertension, commonly called the silent killer, noting that it’s one in all the most dangerous conditions for black men.

He also admitted to missing several warning signs that could have potentially prevented the brain aneurysm that occurred during his tumultuous 2021 divorce from Nicole Young.

Corden “This Life of Mine… with James Corden” podcast was released on Sirius XM on March 14 and delved into the traumatic experience.

“It’s just something you cannot control, it just happens. I had three strokes in those two weeks,” said the NWA founder, whose real name is Andre Romelle Young.

Adding: “I got up (on January 5) and went on with my day and thought I could just lie down and take a nap. My son had a friend who was there and she said, “No, we have to take you to the hospital.” So they took me to urgent care.”

The son and his friend took the chart-topping “Chronic” to urgent care at a local hospital in Cedars-Sinai.

“The next thing you know, I’m passing out. I went in and out of consciousness and ended up in the ICU. I used to be there for 2 weeks. I hear doctors coming in and saying: “You don’t even know how lucky you are,” recalls the 55-year-old.

During the interview, the artist said that shortly after waking up, he felt excruciating pain behind his right ear. He didn’t know that this was a common symptom of aneurysms. Despite the discomfort, he tried to dismiss the feeling.

Dre says he asked doctors what could have stopped the aneurysm, but he didn’t get a clear answer. He discovered that although he felt fantastic physically, there have been internal aspects that contributed to his deterioration.

“I had no idea I had high blood pressure or anything like that,” Dr. Dre told Corden. “I lift weights, I run, I do everything I can to stay healthy.”

“High blood pressure in black men, that’s what it’s all about. They call it the silent killer. You just have no idea,” Dre explained. “So you know, you gotta control your shit.”

Strokes and stroke-related fatalities are more common amongst black Americans than every other demographic group in the United States, According to based on information from the American Stroke Association. About 55 percent of black adults have hypertension.

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that untreated hypertension is a risk factor because it will probably damage and weaken arteries, ultimately increasing the likelihood of a brain aneurysm.

Not all causes are fully understood, but several health organizations imagine this increased risk is attributable to a combination of upper prevalence of risk aspects and social challenges.

Chronic discrimination, stress and depression resulting from racist experiences are believed to contribute to this disparity. Common risk aspects for stroke amongst black Americans include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking.

Although there are a lot of risk aspects, 80 percent of strokes might be prevented by eating more fruits and vegetables, limiting salt in your food regimen, increasing physical activity, not smoking, losing extra weight and managing stress.

Dre and Nicole were going through a nasty divorce during which he was accused of abuse and hiding money despite all her expenses, including a chef who prepared food for her each day. They each say he is in denial.

Nicole also alleged that Dre forced her to sign a prenuptial agreement, effectively barring her from access to his considerable wealth amassed through his music industry ventures, including the lucrative sale of Beats By Dre to Apple in August 2014 for $3.6 billion in money and shares.

Before Dre suffered an aneurysm, she was preparing to face Nicole in court on January 6, 2021, during which she demanded that the judge award her $2 million a month in temporary spousal support.

The music mogul vehemently opposed Nicole’s demand, maintaining that her actual expenses amounted to roughly $293,306 – an amount he has covered since their split.

Nicole wanted the court to order Dre to pay her legal fees, which she said were $5 million.

Dre never made it to the trial. Still, the work was done and Nicole left with temporary support. As the Grammy winner recovered in his hospital bed, negotiations began between Nicole’s legal team and Dre’s representatives, with them agreeing to honor the $2 million demand until the two appear in court at a future date.

In a subsequent lawsuit filed a few months after the incident, Dre stated that Nicole’s claims were a source of enormous stress to him, although he stopped in need of attributing them to an aneurysm. AllHipHop.com reports.

By December 2021, they reached a settlement wherein the rapper agreed to pay his ex-wife $100 million.
