House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries rejected GOP claims a few commitment to upholding the Affordable Care Act, pointing to the party’s history of committing to repealing it.

Jeffries’ comments got here in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who recently said that Republicans don’t have any plans to repeal the ACA, although he acknowledged that GOP lawmakers proceed to push for sweeping health care reform. This got here after years of consistent Republican attempts to dismantle the 2010 law, commonly generally known as Obamacare.

“House Republicans have been obsessed with repealing the Affordable Care Act since 2010, when it was first passed. This is clear as day to the American people and has now been confirmed by many members of the Republican Party leadership in the House of Representatives,” Jeffries he said . “They are determined to end the Affordable Care Act as we know it.”

Johnson initially mentioned at a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Monday night that health care reform can be on the Republican agenda in the first 100 days of the recent Congress in the event that they secured each chambers and the White House.

“No Obamacare,” he replied. “The ACA is so deeply entrenched that we need massive reforms to make it work, and we have a lot of ideas about how to do it.”

The ACA was considered controversial when it was first passed under President Obama. The landmark health care law expanded Medicaid, required insurers to cover patients with pre-existing conditions and required coverage of preventive care. It also allowed young adults to stay covered by their parents’ medical health insurance until the age of 26, and introduced various consumer protections for people purchasing their very own insurance.

Although health policy was initially met with resistance, questionnaire shows that over 60% of Americans support it. Democrats see Johnson’s latest comments as a signal that Republicans may try to repeal the law again, despite Johnson’s statement that he “made no such promise.”

“We talked about how we are constantly striving to lower the cost of health care for people, protect people with existing conditions… expand access to care and the quality of care,” Johnson he said accusing Democrats of “lying” about their position.

However, Jeffries condemns Johnson’s claims. He and other Democrats have also proposed changes to current health care law, including Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to expand home care advantages for the elderly.

“As House Democrats, we are committed to protecting the Affordable Care Act,” Jeffries said.
