Port of Seattle shares details of ransomware attack
The Port of Seattle has released statement On Friday, it was confirmed that the corporate had fallen victim to a ransomware attack.
The attack occurred on August 24, and the airport (which also serves Seattle-Tacoma International Airport) said it “experienced some systems outages, indicating the possibility of a cyberattack.”
Port now describes it as a “‘ransomware’ attack by a criminal organization known as Rhysida.” (The group was also apparently accountable for last 12 months’s cyberattack on the British Library.) Because Port refuses to pay the ransom, Rhysida “may respond by publishing the data they allegedly stole on their dark web site.”
“Our investigation into what data the actor stole is ongoing, but it appears that some of the port’s data was obtained by the actor in mid- to late-August,” the port said, adding that it can notify employees or passengers if it learns that any of their data has been stolen.
TechCrunch’s Devin Coldewey flew over the airport a couple of days after the attack and saw firsthand that many airport systems were still down.
