Comedian Sam Jay Experiences Career Breakthrough Moment at ‘The Roast of Tom Brady’

Sam Jay could change the course of her profession with the performance she gave at “The Roast of Tom Brady”” ON Netflix. Jay was already a comedy star, starring in a Netflix comedy special titledSam Jay: 3amand starred in the HBO series “Stop by with Sam Jay” — but she still has lots of room to grow. She’s funny and fearless, a star within the comedy world but not yet a household name. The Roast was an enormous show — It was watched 1.67 billion minutes, significantly greater than every other program that week — and introduced her to thousands and thousands of individuals who didn’t know her. Jay talks to me about roast on this clip from our recent interview together with her on “Masters of the Game.”

Everyone knew the Brady Roast was going to be an enormous show, so there was lots of pressure coming into it. Jay definitely felt the pressure as a comedian who wasn’t as well-known as lots of the stand-up comedians on the bill — Kevin Hart, Nikki Glaser, Jeff Ross — but she’s had lots of support from other comedians and he or she’s got lots of confidence. She carries herself with swagger on and off the stage. She speaks like someone who knows she has something necessary to say. I do not feel like she’s in search of our validation. She’s found her comedic voice and he or she’s ready to offer it to us.

Jay began doing comedy later in life—she did her first comedy gig at age 29. Most successful comedians start much earlier. There were obstacles in life that prevented her from starting earlier, nevertheless it doesn’t matter—starting late gave her the arrogance and focus. She grew quickly because she’s smart and talented, but in addition because maturity centered her.
