Pharrell Sends Love to PETA Activist Who Heckled TIFF Premiere
Pharrell responded lovingly to one PETA activist who interrupted the premiere of his biopic to criticize his fashionable looks, which included animal fur.
He was a music tycoon his premiere The Lego biopic “Piece by Piece” on the Toronto International Film Festival on Tuesday, when a PETA activist stormed the stage to protest Louis Vuitton’s elements introduced during his current reign as men’s creative director, reports the protester shouted as Pharrell took the stage for a Q&A portion of his premiere, holding an indication that read, “Pharrell: Stop Supporting the Killing of Animals for Fashion.”
“Your Louis Vuitton collection… Pharrell’s collection is made of their blood,” the activist shouted. “Pharrell, stop torturing animals! Ostriches are being hung upside down, electrocuted, with their necks cut!”
Pharrell calmly responded to the commotion, telling the protester, “You’re right, you’re right, God bless you, it’s okay.” The “Happy” singer even encouraged the audience to applaud the protester as she was led out of the theater and continued to shout, “Pharrell, stop torturing animals.”
After the protester was removed, Pharrell addressed PETA’s concerns about Louis Vuitton’s use of fur under his leadership. According to the mega-producer/entrepreneur, he held meetings to make “changes” that will please the animal rights organization.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day. And sometimes when you have plans to change things and situations, you have to put yourself in a position of power and influence where you can change people’s minds and help move forward,” Pharrell told the group.
“That’s not necessarily the way to do it, and sitting in my shoes, when I’m speaking on behalf of organizations like this, unaware to them, they come here and hurt themselves,” he added. “But that’s OK; when that change happens, everyone in this room will remember that I told you; we’re actually working on it. And if she had just asked me, I would have told her. But instead she wanted to repeat herself.”
PETA released footage of the moment to brag about interrupting the premiere of Pharrell’s film.
“We DID premiere @piecebypiece @pharrell on @tiff_net to remind @louisvuitton’s men’s creative director that animals suffer because of wild animal fur and skin,” the organization said he wrote“Do the right thing and switch to artificial and vegan alternatives NOW!”
The groundbreaking LEGO biopic about Pharrell hits theaters Friday, October 11. The animated film features LEGO figures of Pharrell, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg.
