‘Where Is My Baby Going?’: Steph Curry’s Family Reveals the Incredible Reason They Were Absolutely Against His Draft to Golden State Warriors

Steph Curry’s future with the Golden State Warriors has sparked widespread speculation amongst fans and analysts, fueled by rumors that he was being traded following his gold medal win at the Paris Olympics.

Experts are divided on the possibility of a trade this winter, especially if the Warriors’ management struggles to find additional stars following the departure of Kevin Durant in 2019, According to to Athlon Sports.

Curry apparently fueled a few of the rumors by removing “Guard for the @Warriors” from his Instagram bio. His full Instagram bio now reads: “Believer. Father. Husband. Founder. Philanthropist. And… Olympic Gold Medalist. Philippians 4:13.”

Despite the rumors, Curry confirmed his commitment to the Warriors by recently signing a one-year, $62 million contract extension.

The deal is the maximum allowed under the NBA’s “over-38 rule,” which limits long-term contracts for players over the age of 38. The extension keeps Curry on the team through the 2026-27 season, meaning 15 years on the team.

Interestingly, Curry’s adventure with the Warriors began against the wishes of his family.

His mother, Sonya Curry, told Atlanta Black Star that when he was about to be drafted in 2009, the family wanted Steph to play closer to home, on the East Coast, not removed from their home in North Carolina.

“We didn’t want him to go to Golden State because we wanted him to be in New York,” she said. “And they were the next choice.”

According to Sonya, who was married to Steph’s father, Dell Curry, during his 16-year NBA profession, she had no idea where Golden State was.

“When the Golden State was announced, I thought to myself, ‘Where will my baby go?’”

When her husband explained that the team was in Northern California, she said, “I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to take him all the way to the West Coast!'”

Another concern was the potential lack of playing time due to Golden State’s depth at guard. “We didn’t know if it was the right place for him and if he could play that much,” Sonya admitted, though she now admits that “God knew best.”

Since then, Curry has grow to be a mainstay of the team, leading the Warriors to 4 championships since his arrival, including titles in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022 — their first since 1975.

Heading into this season, the father of 4 is targeted on adding one other championship to his resume.

IN conversation Last month with The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II, Curry made his intentions clear: “I’ve always said I wanted to play for one team my entire career. So it’s good to put the (extension) thing aside and just focus on basketball and the season.”

He added: “It’s still about winning and taking the steps necessary to give yourself a chance. The standard hasn’t changed. The expectations haven’t changed.”

The guard who decided could be a “Warrior for Life” has a formidable track record, including two MVP awards and franchise records for points, assists, steals, three-pointers and more.

The 2024-2025 NBA season begins on October 22, with training camps starting on September 25.
