Black Dragon Brings Chinese Takeout to Black Americans in Philadelphia
Black Dragon is just not your typical Chinese takeout joint. This black-owned restaurant in West Philadelphia combines two cuisines and communities to create a novel culinary experience.
Officially opening on August 29, Black Dragon caters to all tastes while serving something different to the realm. Black Dragon features the sweet and spicy chicken “General Roscoe’s” as a substitute of the normal “General Tso’s.” With spring rolls full of kale and oxtail on the menu, the restaurant offers a twist on classic Chinese dishes.
But the takeout spot still pays homage to each heritages. It also offers a standard takeout look, but with a more vibrant aesthetic. The restaurant also fills a niche in the variety of local eateries which are shrinking across the town.
His website explains“The idea for Black Dragon Takeout came from chef Kurt Evans, who noticed a disturbing trend: local Chinese takeout restaurants were closing, particularly in black communities. Second-generation Chinese Americans were no longer taking over these family-owned businesses, creating a significant gap in food deserts where residents had relied on these establishments for decades for quick, hot meals.”
Despite the lofty experience, Black Dragon stays true to its roots. According to Eater, there aren’t any complaints needed for dine-in, where dishes range from $6 to $26. Kurt Evans, who has a successful history of running restaurants, hopes to change the town’s culinary landscape for the higher.
Black Dragon goals to develop into a “transformational force” in West Philadelphia, specializing in local employment and offering second probabilities to former inmates.
“By reclaiming spaces once occupied by Chinese takeout restaurants, we aim to rebuild and improve our communities,” the web site continues. “We strive to create a welcoming environment where customers can enjoy high-quality dining without the traditional barriers of plexiglass windows. Our goal is to build trust and lasting relationships with our customers, ensuring everyone feels valued and connected.”
Now each locals and tourists can “step into the dragon” and taste unique dishes with a well-recognized taste.
