With somewhat help from a few of the music industry’s brightest talents, City equipment is revolutionizing the 2024 back-to-campus season with the newest chapter of its Shift Happens campaign.

As students prepare for the autumn semester, several campuses will kick off the yr with Concerts, a series of dynamic, in-store live music events featuring Gen Z favorites, creators, and memorable moments designed to construct connections and community ahead of an exciting academic yr.

ESSENCE was readily available to kick off the event series at Bulldog Country, home of Urban Outfitters, just steps from the University of Georgia campus in Athens, GA. Ironically, the primary headliner to hit the road with the UO was Quavo, an Athens-born, aspiring Bulldog and fixture in Georgia music and culture.

The excitement was palpable as students, Athens locals, and even the youngest of Quavo fans crowded the road that stretched down Clayton Street in downtown Athens, waiting to see their hometown hero perform a few of hip-hop’s hottest hits. Even because the venue reached capability, fans crowded open doors and peered through store windows to catch a glimpse of Quavo’s performance through merchandise.

Before Quavo took the stage in the back of an Urban Outfitters store, the gang inside warmed up to a DJ set crammed with current hip-hop hits and screams of joy as students “shouted out Dawgs” to kick off the night.

Next up was Atlanta rapper and producer Kenny Mason, who warmed up the scholars and locals with hits like “4 My,” “Jump In,” and his collaboration with J. Cole and JID, “Stick.”

Concertgoers also got their first take a look at the UO College Shops: 20 specialty stores throughout the campus stores, stocked with the season’s must-have college supplies. Of course, the Athens store was stocked with red and black UGA gear to rejoice the varsity spirit of their beloved Bulldogs.

Quavo wowed the gang along with his latest collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, “Fly,” before diving into Migos classics like “T-Shirt” and “Bad & Bougie,” in addition to his hit collaboration along with his late nephew and Migos bandmate Takeoff, “Hotel Lobby.” While in his hometown, he even invited his sister Tatiana Davenport, Takeoff’s mother, and his own mother Edna Marshall on stage to dance and rap in memory of their deceased member of the family.

Kicking off on August 13 was just the start of this immersive travel series. After the electrifying Athens, UO LIVE will proceed to top college towns. Next up: Georgetown, DC, where British singer-songwriter Towa Bird will take the Hoyas stage on September 4.
