Republican Party Leaders Abandon Donald Trump in Favor of Kamala Harris
Over 200 members previous Republican administrations have supported Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris defeated party candidate Donald Trump, it was reported
In an Aug. 26 open letter, former staffers for former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) signed on to support their opposing party’s candidate just days after the Democratic National Convention (DNC) brought together a gaggle of GOP supporters.
Nearly five other former staffers of President George H. W. Bush also signed the letter, bringing the overall to 238. “We are coming together again today, joined by new George H. W. Bush alumni, to amplify our statements from 2020 and, for the first time, collectively declare that we will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz in November,” the letter reads.
“Of course, we have a lot of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Governor Walz. That’s to be expected. But the alternative is simply untenable.”
Other signatories to the Harris-Walz letter include former McCain campaign chiefs Mark Salter and Chris Koch, former McCain 2008 campaign legislative director and press secretary Joe Donoghue and Jennifer Lux, and longtime George H. W. Bush campaign chief Jean Becker.
There has been an influx of Republicans in recent years who’ve supported the Democratic nomination. Another group of anti-Trump supporters — made up of 150 former staffers from Bush, McCain and Romney — once pledged support for President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.
The group said pressure was placed on moderate Republicans and independents. in key states that supported Biden “to take a courageous stance again.”
At the DNC in Chicago, former Trump allies like Melania Trump’s former press secretary and top aide Stephanie Grisham spoke out against her former boss, saying the accused businessman has “no empathy, no morals, and no commitment to truth.” She also let Trump supporters know what she really thinks of them behind closed doors, allegedly describing them as “basement dwellers.”
Olivia Troye, an adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, said the forty fifth president wants to advertise division “because that’s the only way he’s going to win.” “You don’t vote for a Democrat. You vote for a Democrat,” Troye said. “You don’t betray our party. You stand up for our country.”
Pence has openly admitted he is not going to support Trump in November 2024.
The letter also underscored the damage that the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 policy project would do under one other Trump. “Domestic, another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic leadership, this time focused on pursuing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions,” the letter continued.
“Democracy movements abroad will be irreversibly compromised as Trump and his acolyte J.D. Vance grovel to dictators like Vladimir Putin while turning their backs on our allies. We cannot let that happen.”
Since Harris launched her presidential campaign, her team has been working diligently with GOP opponents to form “Republicans for Harris.” Members of that group include former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan and Mesa, Ariz., Mayor John Gile, all of whom spoke under blue lights on the convention and endorsed Harris.
