Tesla posts remote work offers, reversing Elon Musk’s philosophy

Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk hates remote work and once called it “morally wrong,” his company Open positions published with a large and lucrative salary range.

Musk’s company is reportedly offering remote employees salaries starting from $79,000 to $270,000, with the quantity depending on the position and qualifications of the potential worker.

However, as Elon Musk says, he doesn’t hide the incontrovertible fact that shouldn’t be a supporter of remote work. In 2022, Musk told the corporate’s executives that they might either return to the office or be fired.

Musk described work from home how illogical in a 2023 interview. “Like, really, are you going to work from home and tell everyone else who made your car to come to the factory?” Musk said. “The people who make your food that gets delivered can’t work from home? The people who fix your house can’t work from home?”

Musk continued: “I think the whole concept of working from home is a bit like that fake Marie Antoinette quote, ‘Let them eat cake.’ It’s not just a productivity thing. I think it’s morally wrong. People need to get off their fucking moral high horse with this work-from-home crap.”

Nicole Penn, president of promoting and marketing firm ECG Group, said that while the culture at Tesla may make working from home less feasible, Musk’s position could potentially leave him without talented employees.

“Every employee has an environment that either increases or decreases their productivity. If Tesla’s culture is based on collaboration and ideas being born on the factory floor, there’s no way a remote team member can effectively tap into that,” Penn said. “You have to wonder if Elon will retain top talent who need and appreciate more flexibility.”

Tesla’s opening as much as remote work, when previously in 2023 Musk’s company had only three work-from-home positions that Musk needed to approve in person, is a pointy reversal from Musk’s earlier demotion of remote work positions.

Nick Gallimore, chief innovation officer at Advanced People Mechanics, said that if Musk doesn’t change his policies, he’ll need “something close to a miracle if he expects people to work with him… let alone be more productive.”

Gallimore continued: “Musk’s comments — that remote work simply can’t be as effective or as productive as working in a physical location — put him in the tiny minority of business owners who are betting the future of their organizations on the organizational design principles of the past. The odds are stacked against him: multiple studies suggest that just 10% of people actually want to work in an office full time.”
