Mariah Carey’s Mom and Sister Died on Same Day: ‘My Heart Is Broken’

Mariah Carey recently revealed that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, died on the identical day. “I appreciate the love, support and respect for my privacy during this difficult time,” Carey said of her loyal and supportive fans.

In an exclusive statement to , the Grammy Award-winning singer said:

“My heart is broken that I lost my mom this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life that same day.” She continued, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend one last week with my mom before she passed.”

No other details are known at the moment, including the causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths. While Carey’s relationship together with her mother has been strained over time as a result of her tumultuous childhood and upbringing, she credits her with being the rationale she has her singing talent and decided to dedicate a portion of her 2020 memoir, .

“And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe did everything she could,” she wrote. “I will love you the best I can, always.”

“Like so many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been fraught with contradictions and competing realities. It has never been black and white—it has been a rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a bittersweet string of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” Carey continued within the book. “A complicated love ties my heart to my mother’s.”

The star also had an advanced relationship together with her older sister Alison and brother Morgan, but unfortunately they were unable to reconcile before her sister’s death. Our prayers are with Carey and her family during this difficult time.
