Denzel Washington Makes Shocking Revelation About His Future, and Fans Are Heartbroken

Denzel Washington’s profession is one which many actors can only aspire to. With over 50 movies to his name and a legacy that spans over 40 years, his tenure has been around for over 40 years. However, a recent confession from the award-winning actor has many starting to think that his work on the large screen may soon be coming to an end.

Denzel Washington has played a big selection of complex characters, from a retired commando fighting for justice in “The Equalizer” to a detective masterfully handling hostages during a bank robbery in Spike Lee’s “Inside Man.”

He also delivered a strong performance as Malcolm X within the Brooklyn native’s biopic. Washington’s performance as a corrupt cop in “Training Day” earned him an Oscar, and he tugged on the heartstrings of August Wilson’s “Fences” as a broken sanitation employee who never fulfilled his dreams.

His impressive resume is enhanced by the incontrovertible fact that Washington faced Shakespeare twice on screen, first in Much Ado About Nothing and later in The Tragedy of Macbeth.

In the action-packed Safe House, Washington played a fugitive CIA agent, which helped the film earn greater than $208 million worldwide. Despite that success, his highest-grossing film stays the 2007 hit American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott, during which he played Frank Lucas, a real-life heroin lord who dominated Harlem within the Nineteen Seventies.

In 2024, Washington will reunite with Scott within the upcoming film Gladiator II , and while promoting the sequel, he hinted that this could possibly be certainly one of his last roles, as he seems like he’s explored almost every character he’s focused on.

Luckily for fans, Denzel Washington has two more movies within the works besides Gladiator II. While one untitled project continues to be in pre-production, fans can expect to see him return to the large screen under the direction of Spike Lee, certainly one of his long-time collaborators, in a movie titled High and Low

Washington recently announced that he and Lee are teaming up for his or her fifth film, with the goal of recreating the cinematic magic of their previous collaborations. The duo previously delivered such acclaimed movies as Mo’ Better Blues, He Got Game and the aforementioned Malcolm X and Inside Man.

The highly anticipated project is ready to hit theaters via A24’s distribution channels before being made available on Apple TV+.

This isn’t the primary time Washington has considered stepping away from acting. He previously hinted at retirement during an appearance on the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach in June 2024, suggesting he might focus more on his work behind the scenes.

“What happens for me professionally behind the camera is now as important to me as what happens in front of the camera,” he told a gaggle of filmmakers and aspiring Hollywood actors, Deadline reports.

He added: “I think I’ll be spending less and less time in front of the camera.”
