Exploring latest places is exciting, but your skin doesn’t at all times agree. Between the dehydrating effects of airplane cabin air, the harshness of various climates, and the fast pace of travel, keeping your complexion fresh and radiant could be a real challenge.

That’s why we turned to a skin care expert Tameka Heardexperienced beautician and owner A very royal spaWith years of experience helping clients maintain their glow while traveling, Heard shares her invaluable insights and suggestions for achieving radiant skin irrespective of where your adventures take you.

Discover the secrets to travel-friendly skin care that may keep you feeling fresh below.

The influence of air in the aircraft cabin

“The air in an airplane cabin can have a significant impact on your skin due to its low humidity levels,” Heard explains. “The average humidity in an airplane cabin is around 20%, compared to the optimal range of 40-70% for healthy skin.” This lack of moisture can lead to dehydration and dryness, weakening the skin’s natural protective barrier and making it more susceptible to irritation and inflammation. In addition, recycled air on airplanes accommodates higher levels of pollutants like carbon dioxide and ozone, which cause oxidative stress and premature ageing. “That’s why your skin looks so dull after a flight,” Heard adds. “It’s lost a lot of its moisture.”

Essential skin care products for on the plane

To combat the drying effects of air travel, Heard recommends just a few key products. “Choose a micellar water to remove any makeup or dirt from your skin. A good moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin can help lock in moisture and prevent your skin from feeling dry and tight. Don’t forget to apply SPF, especially if you’re sitting by a window, as UV rays can penetrate glass at high altitudes.”

Bringing a face mist and sheet mask also can refresh and revitalize your skin during your flight. “Hydration is key, so make sure to drink plenty of water and use a hydrating face mist during your flight to combat dryness,” Heard advises. Some of her favorite hydrating sprays include La Roche Posay Thermal Spring Water Face SprayAND Caudalie Grape Water Moisturizing Face Mist.

Pre and Post Flight Skin Care Routine

“Applying a moisturizer before boarding a plane can create a protective barrier on your skin, locking in moisture,” suggests Heard. After landing, reapplying moisturizer may help replenish lost moisture and restore skin’s balance. “Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to restore and maintain skin’s moisture levels throughout the flight.”

Common Skin Problems and Prevention

Sunburn is a standard problem for travelers. Heard advises: “Use a high SPF sunscreen, wear protective clothing like hats and sunglasses, and seek shade during peak sun hours.” Insect bites are one other common problem. “Using insect repellents that contain DEET or picaridin can help prevent bites,” she says. Dry skin and dehydration are also common due to changes in climate and altitude. “Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, using a moisturizer regularly, and avoiding harsh soaps that strip your skin of its natural oils.”

Maintaining your skincare routine while traveling

“Maintaining a regular skincare routine while traveling can be difficult, but with careful planning, it’s possible,” Heard says. Invest in travel-sized versions of your favorite products and pack multi-purpose items like a moisturizer with SPF. Be aware of the climate you’re in and adjust your routine accordingly. “You don’t want to use too many active ingredients or retinol when traveling, especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time in the sun,” she warns.

Post-Travel Skin Care Treatments

Before and after your trip, consider special treatments to protect and nourish your skin. “Include hydrating masks, hyaluronic acid serums and gentle exfoliators in the week before your trip,” Heard advises. “After your trip, book a facial to refresh, deep cleanse and soothe your skin. Facial extractions and exfoliators are great for renewing your skin after your vacation.”
