Simone Biles slips off the balance beam during the final and misses the Olympic podium
PARIS (AP) — Simone Biles didn’t win a medal on the balance beam this time.
The American gymnastics star slipped and fell from the apparatus at the end of a series of acrobatic exercises during the balance beam final at the Paris Olympics on Monday, depriving herself of the opportunity to enhance on her bronze-medal performance from 2016 and 2020.
Dressed in a blue and white leotard with greater than 5,000 crystals, Biles was halfway through her performance when she lost her balance. The 27-year-old jumped off the beam onto the mat as hundreds of individuals at a packed Bercy Arena — including NFL star Tom Brady — let loose an audible “ohhh.”
Biles scored 13.100, which tied her for fifth place with U.S. teammate Sunisa Lee.
It took a protracted time for her result to are available. At one point, Biles rolled her eyes, seemingly irritated, knowing she wouldn’t finish.
Alice D’Amato of Italy won gold with a rating of 14.366. Zhou Yaqin of China won silver with a rating of 14.100, just ahead of bronze medalist Manila Esposito of Italy. Italy, which won silver behind the U.S. in the team competition, has never before won a medal on the balance beam.

Lee’s long-awaited gold on the balance beam was dashed halfway through her routine when she fell at the end of her acrobatic set, just as Biles did minutes later.
Lee, 21, will leave Paris with three medals, just months after becoming bedridden with chronic kidney disease.
Although Lee’s Olympics are over, Biles still has the freestyle finals to compete in on Monday. She has never lost a serious international competition in the event, including a gold medal she won in Rio eight years ago.
“We were both just a little annoyed because we knew what we were capable of,” Lee said. “We didn’t get it done today, but she’s still got the level and she’s the GOAT, so she’s going to be amazing.”
Biles has a protracted history ahead of her in what could possibly be the final competition of her profession. Biles has 10 medals in her Olympic profession, including seven golds. A medal in the freestyle final would tie her with Czechoslovakia’s Vera Caslavska for second place amongst gymnasts in Olympic history, trailing only former Soviet champion Larisa Latynina, who has won 18 medals.
Biles isn’t revealing many details about what’s next for her after the Paris Games, though she has opened the door a bit to a possible return when the Olympics move to Los Angeles.
“Never say never,” Biles said after winning her second Olympic title in the ski jumping competition on Saturday. “The next Olympics are at home. So you never know. I’m really getting older.”
