“I’ve since learned that this is how many young children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes—they end up in hospital for something completely different,” she wrote. “After more tests, we learned that she was in the ‘honeymoon period’ of living with type 1 diabetes.”

Teigen continued, “We gave him his first insulin shot last night and here we go! It’s a different, new world for us and we’re definitely learning so much on the fly.”

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease by which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells within the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas is unable to supply insulin. The mother of 4 came upon Miles had diabetes when he was hospitalized with a gut infection earlier this summer. Doctors noticed something abnormal in his blood tests, which led to the diagnosis.

There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes; people diagnosed with the condition typically have to take insulin for the remainder of their lives to administer it. The cause could also be a mix of environmental aspects and genetics. Some warning signs to search for include frequent urination, weight reduction, fatigue, extreme hunger, and bedwetting in children who haven’t any history of the behavior.
