James Baldwin’s 100th Birthday Celebration – Andscape

PARIS – Welcome to , a video series by which Andscape columnist William C. Rhoden, NBA senior author Marc J. Spears and Andscape/ESPN commentator Ari Chambers will discuss key topics affecting Black athletes and culture on the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the special, Rhoden talks with award-winning novelist and Parisian Jake Lamar about renowned creator James Baldwin on what would have been his 100th birthday. Baldwin, who died in 1987, was born in Harlem, New York, on August 2, 1924.

Lamar shares the story of Baldwin and his emigration to Paris, how the famous author followed within the footsteps of his idol, creator Richard Wright, the complicated relationship between Wright and Baldwin, and more.

William C. Rhoden is a columnist at Andscape and the creator of Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete. He directs Rhoden Fellows, a training program for aspiring journalists at HBCUs.
