Young barbers cut hair for homeless people in Atlanta
Young hairdressers in Atlanta he gave away free haircuts to the homeless the week of July 28 as a part of an initiative led by U Got Next barbershops in Douglas and Paulding counties, Georgia.
The young hairdressers, one among whom is the granddaughter of shop owners Janet and Nicole Maynor, say they enjoy giving back to the Atlanta-area community.
The children ranged in age from 11 to 16, and their clients seemed thrilled with their work, as one man named Anthony told the outlet: “I feel like a million bucks. It’s amazing! It’s an amazing job they do!”
Janet Maynor described the barbershop’s ambitions as an asset to the community and never exploiting the homeless, saying, “This isn’t a scam to me. This is the real deal, Holyfield! It’s also a lesson in life. We’re just here to give and love and be a blessing.”
Nicole focused on what the work was teaching the kids.
“What they see is what they will do as they grow up,” she said.
Janet also described what she witnessed at her grandmother’s, a knowledge she decided to pass on to her granddaughter, Sky Hoskins, who was one among the young hairdressers cutting hair on the event.
“I grew up seeing people give back. My grandmother always gave back, so I feel like it’s in my heart,” she said.
Hairdressers often participate in such initiatives, offering their services to groom less affluent members of their community. In January presented a profile of Christian Khammany’s worka Houston barber who opens his shop in downtown Houston almost every Monday and Tuesday and cuts hair for the homeless.
Khammany, who began cutting his own hair at age 14 before making a profession out of it, said he was attempting to improve his condition when he considered using his clippers to assist the homeless.
“I don’t always carry cash. So one thing I always carry is clippers,” Khammany told the outlet. “That’s when I thought about it. I thought, yeah, maybe I should start cutting their hair.”
Khammany continued, “God has given me everything I could ask for in terms of success, family, love, happiness and everything else. That’s why I felt the need to give back to the community. I want to influence young people to do something good for the community and become better people themselves. It makes me feel good that I can change lives, one haircut at a time.”
