We’ve all heard the excitement around “mom’s metamorphosis.” First, Rihanna admitted she is ready for a breast lift after giving birth, while liposuction remains most desired operation. What about menopause? “We hear on a regular basis that patients never thought they might get cosmetic surgery until they hit menopause,” says a board-certified surgeon and president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Dr. Steven Williams says ESSENCE.

With the anti-aging craze at its peak, adjusting to your skin’s changes may make you ought to decelerate. “Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years, typically occurring between ages 45 and 55,” says Williams. “Patients may be surprised by changes in fat around the hips or belly, loose or sagging skin, and even things like hair loss.”

Between the ages of 25 and 30 we begin to lose one percent of collagen per 12 months, with a 20% drop by age 45. As estrogen levels drop and hormone levels fluctuate, “these changes affect various aspects of the skin, including its texture, elasticity and hydration,” says a board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera says. “Addressing these changes requires tailored cosmetic procedures that are aimed at specific architectural transformations [like menopause-induced bone loss and thin, more wrinkled skin] experienced by patients.”

Although aging is a natural process, Diet and exercise play a big role how we do it, finding menopause-secure skin treatments can enable you reclaim your age. “A variety of techniques can be used, including energy devices such as lasers and radiofrequency, microneedling, chemical peels, biocollagen stimulators – such as Sculpture AND Radiesse hyperdiluted––and skin care products designed for menopausal skin,” Aguilera says. But a brand new fat-alternative treatment, called Renuva could be the best solution.

“Renuva is an injectable that contains the same growth factors, collagen and proteins that naturally occur in the body’s fat tissue,” Aguilera says, aiming to combat menopause-induced bone loss and changes in fat tissue. “Once injected, Renuva is gradually replaced by the body’s own fat tissue [the next] three to six months”, certified plastic surgeon Dr. Haideh Hirmand he adds. This means that after stimulating the body’s natural fat regeneration processes, “it eventually disappears.”

Unlike traditional injections, which may only add volume and last as long as two years, fat-alternative treatments have a lifespan of as much as 10 years. “For menopausal changes, a lot of the repair and transition is done with nonsurgical procedures,” Hirmand says. “Renuva works well for postmenopausal treatments because it can add volume and improve tissue quality.” Skin treatments are designed to empower patients to make personal decisions about their bodies. That’s why, Aguilera says, “Renuva appeals to people looking for natural-looking, long-lasting tissue augmentation.”
