Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says light rail is planned for Baltimore
BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s administration is moving forward with plans for a brand new light rail project in Baltimore, the governor wrote on social media Thursday.
Moore said last yr that his administration was reviving an east-west transit project that was scrapped by his predecessor, former Gov. Larry Hogan. But Moore was vague last yr about what the project would appear like, whether as light rail, a rapid bus system or a mixture of mass transit options.
In a post on the X website, the governor wrote on Thursday that it could be an urban railway.
“We listened to communities, stakeholders, and leaders across the state—and they were clear that this is what they wanted,” Moore wrote. “We are proud to announce that the Red Line will bring light rail to Baltimore!”
Research from Johns Hopkins University earlier this month found that the red line may have a positive impact on providing individuals with access to jobs.
In June 2015, during his first yr in office, Hogan angered Baltimore officials by announcing that he was not moving forward with the then-$2.64 billion plan. Although Hogan continued work on the Purple Line light rail plan in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, he criticized the Red Line planning, calling it “a waste of waste.”
