Ellie from the New York Liberty is the best sports mascot of all time. Period.

This is an Ellie the Elephant fan account.

In my opinion, she is the best sports mascot to ever do it, and no, I won’t dwell on that.

Okay, okay. I’ll explain it.

Have you seen Ellie in motion?

I’ll admit that I’ve never been to a New York Liberty game where she performs, but ever since I began watching videos of her performances and exploits on TikTok, I’ve been fascinated by her. And because TikTok has an algorithmic approach to social media, my “For You” page is full of videos of Ellie from her account, in addition to the accounts of anyone who mentions or tags her.

I adore it for me.

By profile on social media, Ellie became Liberty’s official mascot in 2021 when the team relocated from Manhattan to Brooklyn. It’s the brainchild of three Black women — Liberty CEO Kei Clarke, chief brand officer Shana Stephenson, and senior director of entertainment Criscia Long, so you already know it’s true.

“Black women are just awesome. We are purveyors of culture. We are literally creating culture,” Stephenson told Andscape magazine.

She added: “The WNBA is a league that is predominantly black women, so we are a reflection of the players in the league, on the court, women in the community, and that’s something that’s really important to this organization. … When we thought about Ellie, there was no question that Ellie’s characteristics reflected that as well.”

That last part is . I even have long maintained that Black culture is American culture, and I’m not alone in believing that. Non-melanated people will at all times try to disclaim it, but they deny it because they can’t stand not being centered in every part.

The fact is that our culture is “borrowed” and appropriated all the time by individuals who don’t appear to be us and do not respect us. Seeing Black women create a cultural icon that represents us in the best way possible, we’re reminded that Black women are our blueprint.

Ellie wears an extended braid, but when the occasion calls for it, she’s going to wear a wig. She wears large hoop earrings and carries a range of fashionable handbags, including her signature Telfar. She dances. She lifts it in a handstand position. She gives you a face. He strikes a pose each time the camera is pointed at her.

Ellie is our good sister.

There is some speculation as to who exactly is behind Ellie’s mask, but in my view, so long as the person wearing the costume is black, I do not care, honey.
