Artist Christian Robinson honors June 11 through creative and colorful storytelling

For years, Google has used its platform to advertise education and diversity amongst its vast audiences. Today, the brand celebrates June 11 with the work of Oakland-based artist Christian Robinson.

On today in 1865, news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas. The executive order officially abolished slavery within the Confederate states. Although the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863, several states continued to oppose it. Although freedom became universal almost 160 years ago, the fight for a really equal nation continues today.

In 2021, June 11 became a federal holiday and people proceed to have a good time it with marches, events and social gatherings. The goal is to honor those that have fought for freedom and a more just nation, past and present.

Robinson is latest Scribble, product of acrylic painting and cut-out collage, is a robust reminder of the continuing journey towards equality. It celebrates the progress that has been made while recognizing the work that also lies ahead. In this photo, children perform double Dutch, which has been a joyful act of bonding for people of color for a long time. By highlighting this beautiful moment with vibrant colours and flawless digital editing, the artist was capable of tell the world a story of liberation and community.

“When creating this Doodle, I thought about what Freedom Day means to me and how fun, play and relaxation are the opposite of the oppression that enslaved people experienced,” Robinson said in a press release. “That’s what I want to show in this article – descendants of enslaved people celebrating fun.”

Today’s Doodle is not Robinson’s first, nevertheless it could also be his most impressive. His mesmerizing murals captures the spirit and meaning of this historic day and will hopefully raise awareness of it in the long run.
