Mike Tyson’s fight with Jake Paul was postponed due to Tyson’s health problems
Mike Tyson’s fight with Jake Paul was postponed after Tyson, 57, fell unwell on a flight last weekend.
Tyson and Paul said Friday they’d announce a brand new fight date next week. They met on July 20 in Arlington, Texas.
Last Sunday, Tyson felt nauseous and dizzy within the last hour of a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, and emergency services were called to his plane to treat the previous heavyweight champion. Tyson’s camp attributed the episode to an ulcer problem.
“During Thursday’s consultation with physicians regarding his recent recurrence of peptic ulcer disease, Mike Tyson was advised to engage in minimal to light training for the next several weeks and then return to full training without restrictions,” fight organizers said in a press release.
Tyson has not fought professionally since June 2005, but has been training commonly for several years. He fought Roy Jones Jr. at a fun gala in Los Angeles in November 2020.
“Overall my body is in better shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be returning to a full training schedule soon,” Tyson said in a press release. “Jake Paul, you may have bought yourself some time, but in the end you’re still going to get knocked out and kicked out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and look forward to delivering an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Boxing officials in Texas considered Tyson’s meeting with Paul a legal fight consisting of eight 2-minute rounds and intensely heavy gloves. Tyson will turn 58 before the fight, which was scheduled to be broadcast on Netflix and is probably going to be an enormous payday for each fighters.
Tickets already purchased for the fight, which was to happen at the house stadium of the Dallas Cowboys, might be honored on the brand new fight date, the promoters announced. The rescheduled fight can be expected to happen in Arlington.
