Becoming famous is not easy, so giving it up will be almost unimaginable. Still, there are a number of of our favourite stars who have stepped away from the spotlight to concentrate on other endeavors. Professional tenons are common and are even really helpful.
As psychologist and labor specialist Allison Gabriel previously reported to ESSENCE, employees should redefine what their profession looks like every dozen or so years in a given field. “We see people after 10 or more years in their careers decide they want to try something completely new,” she said. Here are some stars who gave up fame for a brand new profession.
America
Amerie burst onto the scene as a magnetic singer at an early age and achieved almost immediate success together with her first two albums. In recent years, the singer decided to indulge her love of reading and launched a digital book club.
Al Green
Legendary soul singer Al Green won our hearts over 50 years ago when his hit “Let’s Stay Together” topped the charts. His music profession has garnered countless accolades, including 11 Grammy Awards, but greater than 20 years ago he took a step back to concentrate on his ministry as a pastor.
Lauryn Hill
The iconic rapper, singer and actress made history as the first black woman to win five Grammy Awards in a single yr in 1999 for her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Since then, she has remained at the forefront of the conversation amongst GOAT musicians, despite never releasing one other studio or another notable acting project. Instead, she focused on motherhood for a long time, and recently returned to the stage to seem in commercials.
Dave Chappelle
The iconic comedian shocked the world when he ended his hit TV show in 2005 and left the country for South Africa for a few years. More surprising was the news that he reportedly walked away from a $50 million contract during his stay.
“Did fame scare you?” CBS’ Gayle King asked him in a 2017 interview. “Fame, yes, but not enough to get me on a plane to Africa. Fame is not that scary. But it’s true – fame is a scary concept when it’s aimed toward you, you recognize? Ultimately, that is what it’s – you haven’t got much control over it. Just attempt to be in your best behavior.
Mashonda
Mashonda began her profession as a singer-songwriter in the ’90s and ’00s before landing her own record deal. As a solo artist, she has collaborated with Eve, Jay Z and Snoop Dogg, but despite her success, she took a special path towards art curation.
“When I got older and started making money, there was never a question that I wouldn’t buy art,” she told ESSENCE in 2020. “I don’t even look at it as an investment; I always knew I wanted to have good art in my home.”
So far, she has been the curator of many collections and exhibitions.
