Summer fun preview: 13 music festivals you don’t want to miss
It’s officially summer time, and there are many festivals going down across the country where you can experience this generation’s groundbreaking music. Artists like Lil Wayne, Victoria Monét, Megan Thee Stallion and more are scheduled to appear on the two-person festival in the approaching months, so make sure to grab your tickets, grab your mates and hit the road.
The previous couple of weeks have already seen festivals like The Governors Ball, Roots Picnic, and SummerJam Hot97 set the tone for an incredible season. With upcoming events like Blavity House Party and Florida Funk Fest, there are many options and locations to pick from if you’re a live music enthusiast.
On the Fourth of July weekend, the ESSENCE Cultural Festival returns to the Big Easy to rejoice its thirtieth anniversary like no other. Over the course of 4 days, attendees will give you the chance to enjoy the biggest concert series in the realm, in addition to great food, exciting events and the fantastic thing about black joy. This 12 months’s performers included Birdman, Usher, Janet Jackson, Victoria Monét, Charlie Wilson, SWV and lots of more.

Essence Festival, called “a party with a purpose”, is an annual music festival that began in 1995. The Blavity House Party can be held on the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on June 14-15. Performers include Lil Wayne, Monica, Blxst, Dru Hill, Ryan Leslie, Uncle Waffles, Big Freedia, Freeway and more. There is a warm-up party on Thursday and a Harmony Homecoming party and a Hangover Fitness party on Sunday.
For two days, Orlando will host the Florida Funk Fest on the Central Florida Fairgrounds. Friday will feature sets from Erykah Badu, TI, The-Dream, Lil Jon, Scarface and Juvenile. Saturday will feature Jagged Edge, Charlie Wilson, Jeezy, Faith Evans, 112, Total and more.
Summerfest returns this summer and is poised to be the very best yet. The three-weekend music festival, June 20-22, June 27-29 and July 4-6, 2024, will feature over 900 performers acting on 12 stages in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The band includes Kane Brown, SZA, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty and more.
Taking place at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., the 2024 Broccoli City Festival features headliners Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna and PARTYNEXTDOOR. The two-day event may also feature KAYTRANADA, Victoria Monét, Key Glock, Sexyy Red, Teezo Touchdown, Fridayy, Baby Tate and Lil Yachty, amongst others. Plus live performances from Desi Banks, Issa Rae and Bryson Tiller, amongst others.
This 12 months’s Lollapalooza festival takes place in Chicago’s Grant Park and features headliners SZA, Tyler, the Creator, Future x Metro Boomin and more, in addition to sets from Victoria Monét, Sexyy Red, Tyla and more.
The seventieth Annual Newport Jazz Festival takes place over three days – August 2-4 – and includes a long lineup of performances from a few of your favorite artists. Performers include André 3000, PJ Morton, Dinner Party, Samara Joy, Noname, Alex Isley and lots of more.
Tyler, the Creator, Grace Jones, KAYTRANADA and more will headline this 12 months’s Outside Lands Music Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, going down August Sept. 11. Additional artists include Schoolboy Q, Victoria Monét, Tyla, Corinne Bailey Rae and more.
Detroit’s wealthy history of African-American culture and its status because the birthplace of Motown and techno make it the right location for Afro Nation Detroit 2024. The festival provides a possibility to rejoice resilience and enduring legacy, and connect with Detroit’s vibrant music and humanities communities. The band includes Lil Wayne, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Amaarae, Kash Doll and more.
Nostalgia is the secret when it comes to the upcoming Fool in Love Festival. Held at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, this one-day event features headliners Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross, in addition to iconic musicians equivalent to Nile Rodgers & Chic, Al Green, Santana, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Durand Jones & The Indications, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Kool & The Gang and a number of other others.
The inaugural Sudden Little Thrills festival can be held at Hazelwood Green in Pittsburgh on September 7-8. SZA and The Killers can be headlined, together with artists equivalent to Wiz Khalifa and more.
