A brand new era is dawning for Black women: a “soft living” movement that emphasizes gentleness, self-care, and relaxing deeply held expectations of resilience. This shift towards prioritizing mental health and happiness, which was once an unattainable luxury, is now considered essential.

The “strong black woman” archetype has long been a double-edged sword: a testament to bravery, but additionally a burden of quiet endurance. While admirable, the continued resilience described on this narrative missed Black women’s deep need for rest, vulnerability, and gentleness. The soft living movement seeks to revive this balance.

Cheryl Hudson, owner of Woodhouse Spa in Detroit, has spent nearly twenty years implementing the essence of soppy living into her business. The downtown spa offers greater than just rest—it provides a probability to flee where Black women can deal with themselves without reservation.

Hudson explained to The Michigan Chronicle that as native Detroiters who appreciated spas, “My husband and I thought, ‘There’s no place like this in Detroit. We should open a spa.”

Spotting an commercial for the franchise in 2005, Hudson took motion.

Under Hudson’s leadership, Woodhouse Spa has evolved into the premier sanctuary supporting the well-being of Black women in Detroit. Hudson noted that “there is a whole new market clientele here that we need to re-introduce ourselves to.”

Recent renovations and enhancements are an opulent embodiment of the #softlife ethos.

Manager Christina Woodall described the general spa experience: “It’s not just about skin care or hair removal… it’s the smell, the feel of each product and the serenity of the music.” This multi-faceted environment supports, slightly than diminishes, Black women.

Understanding the soft living movement means recognizing that self-care is greater than indulgence; priority is mental health and self-love. Woodhouse Spa invites guests to redefine success on their very own terms through peace and compassion.
