Whoopi Goldberg broke down in tears after reuniting the ‘Sister Act 2’ cast for their 30th anniversary performance
Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t contain her emotion after reuniting with a few of the original cast members and chorus from “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” to have fun the film’s 30th anniversary.
Dressed as Sister Mary, Clarence Goldberg opened “The View” on Wednesday with a chorus that included the City High singer and Ryan Toby, a member of the original “Sister Act 2” cast. She led the group in a rendition of “Oh Happy Day,” one among the most memorable songs from the film.
Later in the episode, Goldberg explained how the sequel made an impact on audiences around the world when it was released in 1993.
“In all the world, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re the age of these kids when you watch the movie,” the 68-year-old actress explained. “You are their age and you remember your times and you remember how happy you were that you didn’t have to go to Catholic school. But then you remember how sorry you are that you didn’t get into Catholic school and that you missed teachers like them. So I think people just feel like themselves here.”
Goldberg and Toby were joined by several other original “Sister Act 2” cast members, including Kathy Najimy, Wendy Makkena, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Monica Calhoun, Alex Martin, David Kater, Frank Odell Howard, Dionna Nichelle, Jermaine Montell, Tanya Trotter, DeeDee Magno Hall, Ashley Thompson and Deondray Gossfield.

Lauryn Hill, who played star student Rita Watson, wasn’t in attendance at the reunion, but Ralph, who played her mother, had lots to say about the Fugees alum’s talent. The “Abbott Elementary” actress recalls one among the pair’s most iconic scenes, in which she told Hill that there was no way she could work in the arts.
“I had no idea that scene would end this way,” Ralph said. “I believed of my Jamaican mother once I told her I used to be going to be an actress. ‘Will you be an actress? Are you working with all these fake and faux people? For my hard-earned money? NO! NO!’ So in my head I’m playing my mom in this scene. If my mother could see this, she would say, “Lord God, Jesus, you are a good girl!”
The special ended with a performance of “Joyful, Joyful” with students from New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts helping fill out the choir. The show was hosted by Trotter, who sang “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” with Hill in the original film, and directed by Goldberg, dressed as Sister Mary Clarence.
After the moving performance, Goldberg was visibly moved and fought back tears after the performance.
“Don’t forget: sister’s third act is in the works,” she added at the end of the episode. “The script is ready and I can’t wait for the day when I can say, ‘Come along for the ride, I’ve been given the green light.'”
