Lupita Nyong’o on How She’s Dealing with Her Breakup: “I Heard a Voice in My Head: ‘Get a Cat’.”

Lupita Nyong’o is official girl with a cat.

The Oscar-winning actress opens up in a latest magazine cover story Glamor Magazine how her orange tabby cat named Yoyo saved her from the trenches of heartbreak and sadness.

“I really had a hard time believing the joy,” she told the publication. “I used to be flirting with depression. I have not been there yet, but I’ve flirted with it. And I heard a voice in my head: “Get a cat.”

Nyong’o adopted Yoyo after undergoing cat therapy to organize for her role in the upcoming horror film “A Quiet Place: Day One,” which hits theaters on June 28. Nyong’o owns a cat, but Nyong’o was afraid of cats. Not wanting to provide up her role, she underwent therapy to get to know the animal higher. She liked it a lot that she needed to adopt one for herself.

“I feel the very best anecdote for a situation where you are feeling bad is to handle something. I took care of Yoyo and he opened my heart,” she told Glamor.

This article comes out seven months after the actress announced her split from TV presenter and sports commentator Selema Masekela in October 2023. The couple had been romantically linked since December 2022. This was Nyong’o’s first public interaction, and she or he has been open throughout and thus far she has recovered from the breakup.

At the time, she told fans on social media that she was going through a “period of heartbreak” following the “scam,” which she has yet to completely disclose. Since announcing the split, she has also announced that she goes back to keeping her private life a secret, which she emphasized in an interview with Glamor.

While Nyong’o hasn’t publicly shared any updates on her romantic status, she has made headlines in recent months for her romantic encounter with actor Joshua Jackson, including a trip to Mexico in March.
