Gabrielle Union archives her Met Gala looks and beyond for daughter Kaavia James
While a lot of us are looking forward to the 2024 Met Gala on May 6, at the very least one event regular is looking back. As regular gala participant Gabrielle Union recently said People Magazinearchives a few of her most memorable red carpet moments to later share with her five-year-old daughter, Kaavia James Union Wade, starting the gathering with the dress she wore to her first Met Gala.
“So I have a warehouse full of things that I think, ‘Oh, I want to be able to tell this story and how I felt wearing it,'” Union explained. “It started with me putting my first Met Ball outfit in this beautiful display case.”
The idea was clearly inspired Met Costume Institute — beneficiary of an annual fundraising gala and home to over 33,000 archival fashion artifacts.
“I also went to a museum and then I realized that maybe I didn’t have to display it at home, but I could put it in a temperature-controlled room and preserve the material and the memories. So even if (Kaavia) never wants to wear it, she will have a piece of her mom and the stories that come with it.”
“She is obsessive about our wardrobes…shoes and handbags. It’s all concerning the accessories in my closet and Dwyane’s closet. She literally likes to climb on his clothes racks,” the 51-year-old said.
