Not everyone was amused by the antics that took place on the Hot Water Cornbread gathering in Los Angeles. The Texas Hold’em themed gathering was a celebration of Southern music and food that brought together over 100 black vendors on May 5.

This somewhat family-friendly event has turn out to be a topic of dialogue as a video of the lady making her appearance in essentially the most unexpected way has been circulating on social media. The original video of the enthusiastic contestant wearing a red wig, denim Daisy Dukes, denim bustier top and denim leg warmers with white heels first appeared on X.

The user’s caption perfectly explains what people were watching: “OMG… I just witnessed someone twerking to Kirk Franklin. I won’t go outside AGAIN. You all can have it.

The specific song was his controversial 1998 album “Revolution” featuring The Family. Some may remember that the New Age gospel artist faced backlash for introducing a secular approach to the genre to appeal to a younger audience.

Twenty-six years later, there is still outrage, this time because a woman decided to climb a pole and twerk for the crown gathered around her. Although many were rooting for her, she reactions online were completely different.

“Definitely not the revolution he sang about… GP YOU ARE FROM MEHHHHH,” an Instagram user jokingly wrote. Someone else asked: “What made her break out into stripper mode?”

A third person commented: “Twerking to gospel music is very distasteful and disrespectful to God! I would never and would never do that!!

Someone else said they were confused “why she had to activate that stupid thing.”

At least one person comically used the video as an opportunity for self-reflection. “I need to learn to trust like she trusts this pole that it won’t fall,” they wrote, apparently noticing that the young lady was hanging around a light pole that was missing a fixture.

Even Franklin got here under criticism for swinging his hips an excessive amount of during his performances. However, he doesn’t seem to care in regards to the critical comments as he continues to enjoy every moment spent on stage. “Kirk has been on a roll lately. He stood for the streets,” one of the comments linking his movements to the film can be read.

The otherwise jovial display comes after criticism of rapper Sexyy Red, who joined country artist Zach Bryn on stage during his recent concert in St. Louis. These two don’t work together; instead, she was invited because the show was in her hometown and was an opportunity for her to entertain the audience with her twerking and splits.

Much like the unidentified woman dancing to “Revolution,” the “Pound Town” artist faced heavy criticism from naysayers who claimed she portrayed black women poorly.
