In partnership with the NAACP, CBS is ordering a daily soap opera about a wealthy Black family

CBS has officially ordered a series of “The Gates”, a soap opera about a wealthy Black family, per Diversity.

As previously reported by TheGrio, the series, developed through CBS Studios’ partnership with the NAACP, was first announced in March. The series can be the first daytime soap opera with a primarily black solid in 35 years. While details about the series haven’t been made clear, the series will happen in a “posh, gated community” where a wealthy black family lives.

As previously reported, Michele Val Jean joins as author, showrunner and executive producer. Val Jean, a Daytime Emmy winner, has written “over 2,000 episodes of daytime television” on such series as “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital.” Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner join as executive producers, produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP enterprise in association with P&G Studios.

“‘The Gates’ will be everything we love about daytime dramas from a new and fresh perspective,” said Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios/NAACP enterprise Hollywood reporter earlier this 12 months.

“This series will celebrate an audience that has traditionally been underserved and has the potential to be a watershed moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and a center for black culture, “The Gates” may have influential representation, which can be one in every of the key touchstones of the enterprise.

The series is scheduled to debut in 2025, becoming one in every of the first recent daytime soaps in greater than 20 years. The last daytime soap with a predominantly black solid, “Generations,” premiered in 1989. The half-hour drama then made history as the first all-black soap.
