Killer Mike and his wife kept the first nine years of their marriage a secret from their families
The rapper admitted that his wife Shana Render was his “fight coach” and the only one that believed in him after he refused to sign with a major record label.
Killer Mike and his wife escaped almost 20 years ago, taking the saying “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” literally.
According to Peoplethe rapper recently appeared on the “Off Menu” podcast with Ed Gamble and James Acaster, where he revealed several details about his early years with Shana Render – including the undeniable fact that they kept the first nine years of their marriage a secret from their families.
“Within the first two weeks (of dating), I asked her to marry me and she said, ‘Get the f**k out of here. You’re a rapper,” recalls Michael “Killer Mike” Render. “So after about four or five years, we got really high in Vegas and got really drunk, I begged her for my love, we went and got married in a car marriage with our taxi driver as our best man, and then we didn’t tell anyone we were married for nine years marriage.”
Mike said he didn’t reveal the news of their wedding until he started facing pressure from Shana’s “traditional, close-knit” South Carolina family to marry her or stop toying with her.
“We tried to talk like: ‘Hey, we’re trying to build here on some land, we’d like to build a house here,'” he recalls. “And they said, ‘No, you’re just f**king our niece. What will you do to take this seriously?”
The Renders have 4 children: Malik (29), Aniyah (26), Pony Boy (21) and Mikey (17).
In 2019, he said Killer Mike CNBC Do it that marrying Shana was his “smartest business decision”, crediting her as the only one that believed in him when he was struggling financially after turning down a major record label contract and deciding to go independent.
After winning three Grammy Awards in February, Shana praised her husband on Instagram: “We’re winning, baby!!!! 🏆 🏆 🏆 Clean Sweep 🧹 This is your moment and we won’t let anything take it away from you! Live in your Magic Michael! #youdidIT #proudwife #LookAtGod.”
Meanwhile, Mike expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to his wife on the social media platform.
“You stuck by me through thick and thin,” he wrote, in line with People magazine, “and I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband and share this award with you.”
