Meeks, a rating member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, believes President Biden’s message on the Israel-Hamas conflict is reaching Black Americans.

The rating member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., doesn’t consider President Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict will cause him to lose the support of black voters.

While black voters are concerned about the “killing of innocent people” and “want to make sure humanitarian aid reaches the Palestinians,” Meeks told the Grio newspaper that he believes additionally they want “fairness” and “understand that Israel has a right to exist and defend yourself.”

Meeks said President Biden has been very “clear” about his desire to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians and is pushing for a two-state solution. He believes this appeals to voters.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., told the Grio that black voters “want to see a solution,” particularly “a ceasefire that both Israel and Hamas agree to… to make sure we don’t get stuck in a cycle conflicts, violence and death.

However, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, D-Fla., disagrees with Biden’s approach to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and believes it could result in the loss of black voters.

“The attitude that Israel must give way is absurd,” Donalds told the Grio daily.

The Florida Republican added: “Would we stand down if someone came into our country and killed our people? No, we wouldn’t do that. We would destroy them.”

Last week, Biden had a tense phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the 30-minute call, Biden said U.S. policy on support for Israel could change if the nation does not address the “civilian harm” and “humanitarian suffering” caused by military operations in the region. The president also called for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to flow in and hostages to leave Gaza.

Netanyahu agreed to increase efforts to transport aid to the Palestinians. However, this has yet to materialize.

There are currently over 1 million people in Gaza face risk of starvation due to food insecurity and are highly dependent on imports of humanitarian aid.

U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., criticized Netanyahu for failing to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza and creating inhumane conditions in the region.

The Progressive Democrat told Grio that the Israeli leader is “undermining us and our relationship.”

“It’s about human rights. The targets of this conflict are defenseless and poor civilians who are not Hamas,” Bowman said.

While the Israeli Prime Minister continues to break his promise President Biden Bowman said the United States should stop sending military aid to Israel.

“They should not receive our support if they do not intend to join the ongoing humanitarian crisis,” he said.

Since the conflict began on October 7, the United States has been the same supply Israel with military weapons. The conflict in Gaza has displaced greater than 1.7 million people and resulted in the loss of greater than 33,000 lives.

Congressman Bowman claims that six months of engaging in “collective punishment of civilians in Gaza… will not defeat Hamas.”

“Hamas is an idea and this idea will be constantly perpetuated if we simply try to solve this problem with war, rockets and the killing of children and women,” he warned.

Meanwhile, U.S. Republican Glenn Ivey of Maryland said it was critical for President Biden to get “both sides to reach a bipartisan ceasefire agreement.”

Ivey told the Grio: “It would be a huge step in the right direction” that will help aid employees perform their duties without fear of death or injury.
