Fleurs is the most recent of 1000’s to die from kidnappings in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) – South African soccer player and Olympian Luke Fleurs has died in a kidnapping in Johannesburg, his club Kaizer Chiefs said Thursday.

According to police, the 24-year-old defender was shot while waiting for help at a gas station in the suburb of Honeydew, Johannesburg.

“Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night in a kidnapping in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are together with his family and friends at this difficult time,” Kaizer Chiefs said in a statement.

According to police spokeswoman Mavela Masondo, the attackers fled in Fleur’s vehicle and police are investigating the case of murder and carjacking.

Fleurs previously played for South Africa’s under-23 team at the Tokyo Olympics.

Fleurs is the latest fatal kidnapping victim in South Africa, which has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

The latest official crime statistics for the period October to December last year showed that 5,973 cases of kidnapping were reported.
