Al Sharpton rips apart Donald Trump and the “shameless Negroes” who applauded the former president when he claimed his impeachment indictments were boosting his popularity among African-American voters
Former President Donald Trump’s recent campaign trail comments that the 4 criminal indictments against him won him the support of black voters because they viewed him as a victim of discrimination, drawing a pointy response from some, including the Reverend Al Sharpton.
Trump made this statement on February 23 at the Black Republican Chamber at the Conservative Federation of Blacks in Columbia, South Carolina.
The former president, who was charged with 91 crimes as of December 2023, told the audience: “I have been accused of nothing, of something that is nothing. They did it because it is election interference, and then I was charged a second, third and fourth time.”
Trump continued, “And a lot of people said that’s why Black people like me, because they’ve been hurt so much and discriminated against,” as light applause could be heard in the background.
“And they really saw me as discriminated against. It was truly amazing,” Trump added.
He also told the audience that his mugshot — taken Aug. 24 at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta after he voluntarily surrendered following his indictment on racketeering and other charges — was embraced by the black population greater than some other group.
“I am charged on behalf of you, the American people. I am charged on behalf of you, the black population,” Trump also said during the event.
Sharpton shared his displeasure with Trump’s comments on Monday during an appearance on MSNBC, accusing Trump of exploiting the stereotype of black people as criminals who would due to this fact “draw someone in a mugshot.”
The civil rights and social justice activist said that while Trump appeared in a mug shot on election interference charges, black people were arrested at marches trying to achieve the right to vote.
He called Trump’s comments “the epitome of insult,” provided that he is being prosecuted by Black prosecutors including New York State Attorney General Letitia James, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
“So he’s saying that Black people would identify with someone accused of trying to undermine the choices that Black people have made, but we would go with him and not them?” Sharpton said.
During Trump’s speech before the Republican primary last Saturday, he also joked about the black audience, stating partly: “The lights are so bright in my eyes, I don’t see many people there. But I only see Black people. I don’t see any white people. I’ve come this far,” and the crowd laughed.
Sharpton said that in his a long time of involvement in the civil rights movement, he has never seen Trump defend Black people mistreated by the criminal justice system.
“He was the one who took out newspaper ads calling for the death penalty for five young black boys (accused) of raping a white woman in Central Park who was falsely imprisoned,” Sharpton said in his comments to MSNBC. “It was later proven that they didn’t do it because of the DNA. Donald Trump said, “No, punish them anyway!”
Sharpton also said that “every shameless Black person” who applauded Trump’s comments at the rally “needs to check their facts.”
Meanwhile, former congressman and co-chair of the Biden-Harris re-election campaign, Cedric Richmond, who is Black, also responded to Trump’s comments, calling his claims that Black people will support him due to the criminal charges against him “offensive,” “moronic” and “simply racist” – ABC News reported.
“He thinks black voters are so uninformed that we can’t see through this shameless pandering. There’s one other thing coming,” Richmond said.
A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee said in an announcement that Trump “is showing black voters exactly what he thinks of them, and his ideas on how to win them over are as banal and racist as he is,” ABC News reports.
Activist and pastor Bishop Talbert Swan common on POTUS.”
Swan continued: “We have NO connection.”
The 4 charges against Trump include 34 felony counts for falsifying business records in reference to secret money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels and 37 felony counts related to his keeping tons of of secret documents at Mar-a and refusing to show them over. -Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Last August, Trump also faced 4 federal charges in reference to the investigation into Trump’s alleged try to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, including the January 6, 2021 revolt at the Capitol.
Willis charged him together with 18 others in an indictment in August following a two-year investigation into voter fraud in Georgia.
Rep. Byron Donalds, a black Republican from Southwest Florida considered one in every of Trump’s potential vice presidential candidates, defended him during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
“Let’s be clear: our economy is a mess; our border is completely unsecured. These things are of great concern to black voters, just as they are to every voter in our country,” Donalds said.
“But when you layer that with the fact that, yes, this is political persecution by the Department of Justice and radical prosecutors across the country, this is something similar to what Black people have had to deal with on their own within the criminal justice system.”
Donalds continued: “They make it seem very simple: ‘Well, damn, if the government is after him for stupid things, he can’t be that bad, especially considering the fact that Joe Biden is terrible at his job.'”
