Vice President Kamala Harris Celebrates Women’s Sports – Andscape

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris hosted a celebration of Women’s History Month at her Washington, D.C. residence in partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation. Founded by tennis legend Billie Jean King, WSF has brought together an inspiring group of girls to rejoice this 12 months’s theme by leading the way in which for ladies in sport.

The reception, which hosted a roster of over 100 women, brought together barrier-breaking athletes and a few of the most influential voices on the planet. Current Las Vegas Aces president Nikki Fargas, Atlanta Dream co-owner and retired WNBA player Renee Montgomery, and three-time WNBA MVP and 4-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie praised women who’ve made a difference of their field.

“The work you do every day benefits people regardless of gender,” Harris said on the event. The vp’s residence was transformed right into a space for celebration, reunion and a reminder that the legacy of girls in sports is an important a part of everyone’s history.

Harris discussed the importance of equal access to opportunities in sports, which may result in strong leaders and an excellent stronger nation. Harris also shared her mother’s advice about laying a foundation for others.

“My mom always said, ‘You can be first, but make sure you’re not last,’” Harris said. “Never let anyone tell you who you are. You tell them who you are. That is the spirit of this work.”

While traveling across the country, Harris pays surprise visits to young athletes. In January she visited me coach Dawn Staley and the University of South Carolina women’s basketball teamand she or he surprised the St. softball team Paul Central High School on March 14, who was also invited to the Women’s History Month reception.
