As the 2024 US presidential election approaches. Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) and ESSENCE released their annual Power of The Sister Vote survey, a survey of Black women on the issues that matter most to them.

This is the ninth 12 months of BWR and ESSENCE collaboration, and this 12 months’s survey includes findings from HIT strategies polled 800 black voters across the country from February 16-21.

The results show that in 2024, economic concerns proceed to be on the minds of Black women voters, with particular emphasis on the cost of living, as 56% of respondents said they feel economic conditions in the country are worsening, and greater than half of them say they feel that they’re falling behind economically.

A majority of Black women (47%) across generations are dissatisfied with the direction of the country, up 18 points from 2022, largely due to concerns about the cost of living.

The poll also found that there may be a clear “generational gap in the Black women’s electorate in which older Black women are closed off and motivated to vote while younger Black women are considering their options.”

Ultimately, Black women imagine the most important issues in the 2024 election are inflation, the economy and reducing gun violence, according to the poll.

Other key findings from the Power of The Sister Vote survey include:

  • “Fighting inflation and cutting costs” got here in first place (39%) as the most important issue in the 2024 elections.
  • “Reducing the cost of living” was the top concern, with 86% of respondents rating it at the least nine on a scale of 0 to 10.
  • Gun violence was also a major topic of concern, as 29% of respondents said reducing gun violence and expanding gun safety laws ought to be a top issue in the 2024 election.
  • 88% of Black women support reproductive freedom.
  • 62% of respondents said they were more likely to support a candidate running for office if she or he was committed to supporting racial justice.
  • According to the poll, “Black women voters believe the Democratic Party is significantly better than the Republican Party on many issues, especially when it comes to protecting their rights, freedoms and equality,” and 66% imagine the party “fights” for women’s rights “.

BWR and ESSENCE published the survey earlier this month in collaboration with thirteenth Annual BWR Women of Power National Summit (BWR Summit 24).

The Black Women’s Roundtable is a program of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, a nonprofit organization focused on engaging, educating, organizing, and mobilizing African Americans of all ages to take part in the democratic process.
