Coco Gauff advanced at the Miami Open, Naomi Osaka was eliminated
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) Third-seeded Coco Gauff overcame a first-set deficit to defeat Océane Dodin 6-4, 6-0 on Sunday to advance to the fourth round of the Miami Open for the second time in her profession.
Gauff won 10 straight games after Dodin took a 4-2 lead in the first set, thanks partly to Dodin’s nine double faults at key moments.
Gauff has only one loss in her last 23 games in the United States. That loss got here earlier this month against Maria Sakkari in Indian Wells.
Gauff, who turned 20 on March 13, is the youngest American player to complete in the top three in Miami. The reigning U.S. Open champion from South Florida attended the event growing up and said winning the title there could be special.
“It would be really nice to win here at home,” said Gauff, who was born in Delray Beach, Florida. “I think the best part of winning here is that I can just go home with the trophy and not have to fly and pack. … And I’m a Dolphins fan, so maybe if I win here, they can win another Super Bowl trophy.”
