Apple TV+ Presents First Look at Huey P. Newton’s Drama Series ‘The Big Cigar’
Apple TV+ announced the premiere date and released the primary photos from the upcoming limited series about Black Panther Party leader and social activist Huey P. Newton on Thursday.

The first two episodes of the six-episode series will premiere on the streamer on Friday, May 17, with latest episodes appearing every Friday thereafter until June 14. Joshuah Bearman, who wrote an article for Big Cigar magazine, will function executive producer of the Apple TV+ series alongside Don Cheadle, Janine Sherman Barrois and Jim Hecht.
André Holland stars as Newton within the series produced by Warner Bros. Television, with Cheadle directing and executive producing the primary two episodes. Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, PJ Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie and Glynn Turman round out the solid.
“The Big Cigar” will delve into the extraordinary true story of Newton’s escape from FBI custody with the assistance of film producer Bert Schneider, played by Nivola. According to the discharge, Newton and Schneider devised an “impossibly complex plan involving the production of a fake video that fails in every possible way.”
Holland looks almost similar to Newton within the Apple TV+ press photo from the second episode of the series. In one other photo, Boone, who plays Newton’s girlfriend and future wife, Gwen Fontaine, smiles while holding Holland’s face for the primary time.
Holland, known for his role within the Oscar-winning film “Moonlight,” also stars within the Shirley Chisholm biopic “Shirley” and the 2024 independent film “Exhibiting Forgiveness.” Boone first rose to fame on Showtime’s “The Chi” and later appeared on Prime Video’s “Hunters” and Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere.”
