Damson Idris wins first Image award, calls mom ‘good luck charm’
Damson Idris is officially the winner of the NAACP Image Awards, and it’s all due to his mom.
The 33-year-old actor told the Grio exclusively that his mother, Philippa Idris, was his “good luck charm” after winning his first award for best actor in a drama series on the fifty fifth NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday. Idris, who won an award for his role in “Snowfall,” took his mother on a star-studded date on the awards show.
“I just think it’s all in God’s timing,” he said from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in downtown Los Angeles. “I mean, I’m incredibly spiritual. My mom – I think my mom just had to be here with me. I mean, I’ve been nominated before; I didn’t bring her. In one year, when I bring her, I win. So you know what I mean, she was a good luck charm. So yes, I feel blessed. All glory to God.”
Idris has already been nominated twice for his role as Franklin Saint on the six-season FX series, but he didn’t win the highest award until Saturday’s ceremony. In his acceptance speech for the award, the British actor said his mother had flown “from Lagos, Nigeria for 17 hours” to be together with her son that evening.
“Before she got on the plane she said, ‘Damson, if I come to Los Angeles, you better win,’” Idris laughed. “Thank you, NAACP and my “Snowfall” family. Many of my heroes, resembling James Earl, won this award. Jones, Michael K. Williams and Laurence Fishburne. I’m honored to face amongst them. I’m honored to face amongst you, individuals who encourage me daily.”
He continued: “People who create art that we could be happy with: art of the current, the past and the long run; peace and love. I hope Denzel knows who I’m now. Thank you very much for this distinction. I like you all.”
