Relying on two defense funds to pay bankruptcy lawyers as questions remain over how it will cover a $148 million judgment against former Georgia election officials
A brand new lawsuit details how Rudy Giuliani pays his bankruptcy lawyers using funds from two defense funds.
Those outside funds paid Berger, Fischoff, Shumer, Wexler & Goodman, LLP a $70,000 fee, according to an amended bankruptcy petition filed by the corporate this week. Giuliani Freedom Fund Legal Defense TR paid $40,000, of which $30,000 got here from Giuliani Defense, a fund run by his son Andrew.
The court filing also said Giuliani agreed to pay the firm’s partners between $585 and $675 an hour, between $425 and $510 for associate attorneys and $210 an hour for paralegals.
Giuliani still plans to appeal the $148 million positive he owes former campaign employees Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss for defaming them. The multimillion-dollar judgment raised questions about how the former mayor of New York would settle this amount.
Freeman and Moss asked for transparency on the problem, noting the secrecy surrounding his defense funds and how he supports them.
“Given the totality of the circumstances – including the fact that Mr. Giuliani’s son is the president of Giuliani Defense – it is important to obtain clarity on how the legal defense funds are financed,” he said in February sawing from the state of lawyers Freeman and Moss.
Giuliani’s bankruptcy lawyers attended a hearing last month he stated that Giuliani didn’t contribute to any of the funds. One fund received “hundreds” of donations, most of which were lower than $100, according to one court document. Still, the judge ordered Giuliani’s lawyers to provide more detailed and clear information in regards to the source of the cash and how he pays his legal team.
Trump’s former lawyer filed for bankruptcy a day after a jury announced a $148 million award within the Freeman and Moss defamation case. In last month’s bankruptcy filings, his lawyers wrote that his net income was just $2,308 a month.
Giuliani also stated that he remains to be waiting for Donald Trump to pay his unpaid legal fees. He said that while working as Trump’s lawyer, he “was never paid” and estimated that the former president owed him $2 million in legal fees.
Giuliani continues to face other legal problems. He faces unsettled debts to his former lawyers. One of those former lawyers, Robert Costello, claims Giuliani owes him $1.36 million in unpaid legal fees. Hunter Biden also sued Giuliani for allegedly violating his privacy after accessing data from his private laptop.
