Da’Vine Joy Randolph continued to win awards during the 2024 season due to her role as Mary Lamb in the 2023 comedy/drama. Now she will add Hollywood’s highest honor to her accolades; Academy Award.

Randolph, presented by previous category winner Lupita Nyong’o, tearfully accepted the best supporting actress statuette, starting the 96th annual ceremony as the first recipient.

“God is so good,” she began her speech. “I didn’t think I should be doing this as a career.”

She went on to elucidate that she started off primarily as a singer (Randolph initially focused on classical and opera singing at Temple University), but at her mother’s urging, she became all for what the theater department had to supply.

That decision led to an MFA from Yale School of Drama, a groundbreaking profession on Broadway, and now recognition on cinema’s biggest stage.

“Thank you to my mother for making this happen,” she continued. “Thank you to all the people who crossed my path and were by my side; who guided and led me.”
