Virginia Union University offers a new Doula certification program

Virginia Union University announced the launch of a new Doula certification program, which makes it the primary historically black college or university in Virginia, which offers such a program.

A non-public institution cooperates with the Virginia Board of Health and Birth in Color, organization of spokesman and education of reproductive health. The commercial was issued during a press conference on March 18.

The color was founded by Kendy Sutton-El, who participated on this event and praised Vuu’s involvement in the event of the Black Mother’s health.

“Any place can create its own Doula program, but why not return an organization that actually created consciousness around Doulas, which actually created awareness about the health of the Black Mother and use us as a partnership?” Sutton-el said. “This says a lot about the nature of the Virginia Union.”

Sutton-el also emphasized the critical need for Doulas, especially in black communities, as a part of coping with moms’ health differences.

“People feel much more comfortable, talking to people who look like them when it comes to everything related to health,” she said. “We see that many doctors actually thank us because we give them information that they may not be able to get from the patient.”

According to the Virginia Health Department, black women in Virginia are greater than twice as vulnerable to pregnancy in comparison with white women. The discrepancy is a component of a wider domestic trend during which black women experience much higher mother mortality rates. Efforts comparable to the Doula Vuu program are aimed toward extending the care of culturally competent and limiting these alarming statistics.

According to the variety of deaths related to pregnancy in Virginia, it increased from 64 in 2021 to 67 in 2022, and the pace increased from 66.9 to 70.1 per 100,000 live births. ​
