Halle Berry is tired of being the only black woman who won the best actress

97. The Academy Awards are this Sunday, and the winner of the Halle Berry Academy Award hopes that another person finally joins her on the list of winners of the Black “Best Actress”.

During a recent performance about Trevor Noah “What now?“Podcast, a 58-year-old actress, discussed how lonely at the top of what the host Noah called the” Olympics “of acting awards.

“I hope that this year someone is standing next to me,” she said with an irritable tone. “I hope this will happen because I’m fed up with the space of the space.”

Berry won “Best Actors” in 2002 for her role in the movie “Monster’s Ball”, marking the first and only time when a black woman took the most significant prize. Since she won over 23 years ago, six black women have been nominated eight times in the same category, including Andra Day, Gabourey Sidibee, Qvenzhané Wallis and Ruth Negga; Viola Davis and Cynthia Erivo have been nominated twice.

Meanwhile, only one other woman of color managed to supply victory, Michelle Yeoh, in 2023 for the role of Evelyn Wang in the film “Everything at once”.

Berry told Noah that she felt “chosen” to win in 2002 “opening this door”.

“I knew it was bigger than me,” she added. “At that moment I was chosen as a lantern of possibilities and I think it served this purpose.”

With academy prizes preparing for Sunday television, Cynthia Erivo, nominated for the “best actress” for the role of Elphab in the hit “Wicked”, is ready to hitch Berry. Erivo was previously nominated for her role Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” in 2019. On Sunday, Erivo won “Best Actors” not only would make her a second black woman who took the prize home, but in addition strengthen her as the youngest person to win the status of Egot (someone who won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award).

Erivo is one of six black nominees for this 12 months’s Oscars. The list includes Zoe Siedaña, Colman Domingo and costume designer Paul Tazewell. Discover the rest below!
