Idris Elba revealed the shocking reason why Boris Kodjoe stopped him from watching ‘Brown Sugar’
Longtime actor Idris Elba surprised fans just a few years ago when he revealed he hadn’t seen the classic Black movie “Brown Sugar.”
But the “Luther” star had an evidence for why he avoided it. In a refreshed clip from the 2017 interview, Elba he said Angie Martinez: “When I began (acting), I auditioned for Brown Sugar. Boris Kodjoe got the role.
The film tells the story of two adult best friends who got here together at a really young age because of the birth of hip-hop. They still held one another close, but as they each entered into their very own relationships, they couldn’t ignore the romantic feelings that they had for one another. Boris Kodjoe plays Kelby Dawson, an NBA player who proposes to Syd Shaw, played by Sanaa Lathan.
Taye Diggs is Lathan’s essential star and plays her best friend Dre Ellis. Ironically, Diggs’ character marries Nicole Ari Parker’s character Reese Ellis, who’s Kodjoe’s wife in real life.
Martinez was surprised because, because it turned out, she also appeared in the 2005 film. After asking him to make clear whether Elba was telling her a “true story,” she asked, “Do you know who else was in ‘Brown Sugar’?”
Elba replied, “Sanaa Lathan.” Martinez gave him one other likelihood to get the answer right. She asked, “You know who else?” Elba finally gave in and replied, “You.”
“I was in ‘Brown Sugar,’” Martinez confirmed, then said, “What are you talking about? I was on a radio station.” Elba, nevertheless, revealed that it wasn’t that he missed Martinez’s cameo in the film, but that he simply hadn’t seen it yet.
“I didn’t even watch it, I was so salty.”
Fans took to the comments section of the repost to debate whether Elba would have played Kelby Dawson higher than Kodjoe. One person said: “I would be here to do this… although I think Boris captured the banality of the characters very well,” and one other person wrote: “I can’t see him in this role.”
Others suggested that it could not be believable for Lathan’s character to go away her fiancé for Diggs if Elba played the role.
“Sanaa would never leave you if you played this character. The whole plot would have to change,” wrote a 3rd fan. And a fourth sarcastically asked: “Who’s leaving Idris for Taye?”
